Japanese White Sauce

Japanese White Sauce

If you've ever eaten at a Japanese Restaurant or gotten take out from one, you have either tried the "white sauce" or you've seen people devouring it by the cup full haha.

When we go out the the Japanese Restaurants here its pretty much the main sauce that comes with the food.  Most people are always asking for more! Unless you're my husband and you hate mayo, then this is not for you.

But for the people that know what I'm talking about and the people like me who have an obsession with Japanese Restaurants and Japanese White Sauce, You'll be happy to know that it is possible to make it at home.

After a few failed attempts, we have a winner. :) While it isn't the exact same, I (and Hubby's friends who come over to eat), think its pretty darn close.

Japanese White Sauce

(Printable Recipe Here)

What you need:
1 1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon ketchup
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

What to do:

In a Medium bowl, stir the mayonnaise and water, until combined. Add ketchup, melted butter garlic powder, sugar, paprika and cayenne and stir. Stir, Stir, Stir.

If you want to make it easier to get smooth, microwave the mixture for about 30 seconds. You don't want to get it hot at all, but just enough to help the mayo mix in well.

I usually refrigerate for about 30 minutes before using.

Store in an air-tight container in fridge.

Perfect over shrimp, rice, chicken, veggies, steak.

I love this stuff. I could eat it on everything just about, but I don't. I just stick to the Japanese food. This recipe looks easy and delicious.

I've used Lite Mayo before, works just as good :)

Just a thought. I have a recipe so very very similar to this but it uses 1 tsp of tomato paste instead of the ketchup. Makes a world of difference. In addition I usually let it sit overnight.

I've heard that too, I just hate to open a can on tomato paste for 1 teaspoon.

We tried this tonight and it tasted almost exactly like the white sauce at our Japanese steakhouse. The only difference was it was a little bit spicier, which I loved. And FYI:I have always heard to use Hellmann's mayo.

I also use tomato paste instead of ketchup. It takes the recipe from being 'almost' to being 'right on'. The small cans of tomato paste are only about 25 cents, so I either open and toss or make chili or spaghetti the next day. Also, you can buy the tubes of tomato sauce (like toothpaste tubes) in some grocery stores and you can use what you need and keep the rest.

Just made this and poured it over Chinese take out!! Amazing! I love Japanese steak houses but they are so expensive and hard to find in Albany NY. When I lived in Orlando they were all over. Thank you so much!! This made my day!!
