How to make Chocolate Peanut Butter Poke Cake:

Chocolate cake with holes poked into it for poke cake

This amazing poke cake starts off with my favorite chocolate cake recipe. It’s easy to make, taste amazing and I’ve been using this recipe for years. It’s always perfect with whatever puddings or frostings I use for poke cakes.

We’re baking this cake at 300°F, so so ahead and preheat the oven.

In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  Mix in eggs, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla.  Mix in boiling water until smooth. YES, it’s gonna kind of look like chocolate water and that is ok.

Pour into a greased pan, bake for 55-60 minutes or until done. Let cake cool completely.  When cake is cool, use end of wooden spoon and poke holes into cake.

Make sure that cake is cool before you start poking holes into it or you’re going to tear it up.

Peanut Butter Pudding on cake

Since this is a Chocolate Peanut Butter Poke cake, we’re going to need a homemade peanut butter pudding for this cake.

Homemade pudding might sound scary but have no fear! It’s actually pretty easy to make.

It is just a matter of heating milk, whisking eggs, sugar, cornstarch and flour. Adding peanut butter and whisking until thick.

Make sure to pour that pudding on to the cake while it’s hot so it gets down into those holes we made in the top of the poke cake.

Place cake into fridge for 2-3 hours or until pudding is cold.

Remove cake from fridge and top with a layer Crème Chantilly.  Sprinkle top of cake with chopped mini peanut butter cups.

Poke cakes are best when served cold.

QUICK GLANCE Chocolate Peanut Butter Poke Cake FAQ:

  1. Can this Peanut butter Poke cake be made with other cake flavors? Of Course! I love Chocolate and peanut butter together but you could make any cake you like
  2. How long will poke cake keep in the fridge? Poke cakes should last about 2-3 days in the fridge.
  3. How many holes do I poke in a poke cake? I don’t use an exact number for poking holes in poke cakes. If I’m using my 2 quart dish that I normally bake pokes cakes in, then I find that I normally poke about 8 – 10 holes across the top and then start a new row. I like for the pudding to really get down into poke cakes when I make them. Just remember, if you poke too many (aka rip the top part of the cake up haha) then the poke cake might get too much pudding down into it and be a soggy mess of pudding and cake. (A delicious but soggy mess of cake haha.) If you don’t poke enough holes, then the pudding won’t get down into the cake and then it could turn out to be a dry poke cake with pudding on top. No one wants a dry poke cake.
