How do you make Easy Chicken Divan?
Preheat oven to 350F.
Remove all of the meat from the chicken and shred chicken into small pieces. A whole chicken will yield about 3 1/2 cups of meat. If you don’t want to use a whole chicken you could also use cooked chicken breast or thighs.
For this recipe, I used a store bought rotisserie chicken to keep it simple. However, a homecooked Air Fryer Roast Chicken or an Oven Roasted Chicken will work perfectly for this recipe as well.
Once broccoli has been cooked/steamed, pat it dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to remove some of the water. If you don’t want to use frozen broccoli, you can use fresh broccoli for this recipe too. Just be sure to cook the broccoli before it’s added to the casserole dish.
Cut broccoli florets into small pieces and pour them into a 9×13 casserole dish.
Add shredded chicken to casserole dish.
In a bowl, combine both soups, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, chicken broth and garlic powder. Stir until completely combined and smooth.
Pour sauce over chicken and broccoli. Mix everything together until well coated.
Press casserole mixture flat into casserole dish with back of a spatula.
Sprinkle shredded gruyere cheese over top of casserole.
Combine crushed butter crackers and butter. Mix well and sprinkle over cheese on casserole.
Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
Now your Chicken Divan Casserole is ready to be served!
We enjoy this chicken casserole just as it is for our meal but this casserole could also be served over rice or pasta.
If you want to add a little extra to your dinned table when you serve this chicken casserole, my favorite Cinnamon Butter and these Fluffy Homemade Rolls are great with it.
A side dish like Parmesan Garlic Roasted Carrots or a nice salad would be great with this.
Quick Glance Easy Chicken Divan FAQ:
- Do I need to use precooked chicken for this recipe? Yes. A store bought rotisserie chicken works great for this recipe or a one that you cook at home will work. This casserole only bakes for 30 minutes, so everything that is going into needs to be cooked already.
- Can I use homemade condensed soups? You can however, I haven’t tested this recipe with them.
- How much shredded chicken is needed for this recipe? About 3 1/2 cups of meat. A whole chicken will yield about 3 1/2 cups of meat.
- What are butter crackers? Golden, buttery crackers. Ritz are the most popular butter crackers around here. Off brands are normally just called “Golden Crackers”.
- I can’t find gruyere cheese! This will normally be in the deli section of the grocery store unless your store just has an amazing cheese section. However, it you don’t want to use it or can’t find it, you can just use more cheddar cheese.

I love to see what you’re cooking from the blog!
Love it? Pin it!
Made this for family tonight. Did not have gruyere cheese , used Monterey Jack , Colby, and cheddar. Family loved it even prickly one who does not like broccoli (he went back for seconds)???????? Thank you for so many great recipes.
I’m so happy that y’all liked it, Clara! I bet the Monterey Jack & Colby cheese was perfect for it! I love Colby!
I don’t like sour cream or cream cheese in a recipe any suggestion on what else I could use?
Could you email me the answer.
Thanks,
Helen
Hi Helen, Let me think on it and I’ll send you an e-mail this evening.
Great basic recipe – but made 3 additions/changes. My family hates Ritz crackers on anything so I substitued Panko Bread crumbs. I also added 1 tablespoon Mrs. Dash Original Seasoning, 1/2 grated onion and salt and pepper to taste. The changes made this one fantastic casserole and my family loved it. Thanks for a great starter casserole.
ooo I love the changes you made! So glad y’all liked it!
Great dinner. Can I freeze this?
You can! However if you’re making it ahead of time to freeze I would wait and put the crushed crackers on right before baking it.
I’m making this tonight since I have all the ingredients on hand…sounds delicious!
