Let’s take a second to let it sink in that June is almost over. Wait……Do What?! I’m pretty sure that we just started this month! How is it almost over?! This year is going by way to fast! Slow it down!
We just moved into our new house, oh well, really we moved into our new house in December and I’m still telling people that we just moved in and I literally think that it was “just last month”. Um… that was SIX months ago. What in the world!
With the end of June naturally comes the beginning of July. The middle of summer, the month of beach vacations, red white and blue everything, fireworks and the 4th of July Celebrations! As you probably know, we’re all about 4th of July here! Ever since I married my Military man I’ve felt a who new sense of pride and the 4th of July is just one of those holidays that gives me butterflies.
I of course go all into the whole everything needs to be “Red, White and Blue”. Nothing is safe. I’d color my dogs red, white and blue if I didn’t think I’d go to puppy owner hell. But that’s just where I’d go, so my pups are safe… for now 😉
One thing that isn’t safe from my Red, White and Blue fascination is food. Yep, it’s true. I’m one of those people. I make holiday food match holiday colors. I can’t help it. Really, I’ve tried and it just feels wrong. 🙂
So I attacked the humble but always wonderful S’more. You’ve had a s’more right? I hope so. I know you’re thinking, “Um, who hasn’t had a s’more, what a silly question” but um… my sorority sister Nicole didn’t have her first s’more until last summer, when I made her one and made her eat it. How has she lived?! haha
But the simple s’more had to be taken a step further. I made homemade pop-tarts a while ago and loved them, while thinking of different pop tart flavors to make at home I kept thinking about the s’mores pop-tarts that I loved when I was younger. I then stumbled across these star marshmallows and knew what I needed to make.
Homemade S’more Pop-tarts and since I think the homemade pop-tarts really look like pies, we’re just going to go with homemade S’more Pies! haha
Now these may not be your traditional campfire s’more but I’m totally OK with that. As long as there are marshmallows and chocolate involved I’m happy. I’m not going to fool you and say that these are so super simple and easy….well because that would be a lie.
They’re certainly not as easy at sticking a chocolate bar and a roasted marshmallow between two crackers. But they’re a pretty neat change, if you’re into that kind of thing. I like them because they can be made and then kept at room temperature until ready to eat. (Or you could heat them up a bit before serving). They didn’t have quite as much marshmallow left after cooking as I had hoped but they are still really good in my opinion!
Refrigerated Pie Dough, almost room temperature but still coldish
4th of July Marshmallows (or regular)
Hershey Chocolate Bars
2 tablespoons melted butter
Crushed Graham Crackers (about 2 tablespoons)
Pre-heat oven to 425F.
Using a plastic drinking glass (or round cookie cutter), cut medium-large circles from the dough. Each pie will need two dough circles.
