Homemade Chocolate Cake Mix

This easy Homemade Chocolate Cake Mix takes 5 minutes to whisk together and it is perfect for keeping on hand in the pantry for those chocolate cupcake cravings or last minute party needs! This mix is just as easy as boxed cake mix but 100% homemade!


For Dry Mix

  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

To Use Mix to Make Cupcakes:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup milk


For Dry Mix:

Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and pour into storage jar or container. Keep in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months until ready to use.

To Make Cupcakes or Cake with this mix:

Mix the eggs, vanilla and oil into the dry mix until batter is smooth.

Mix the milk in until combined with batter.

Scoop batter into 24 cupcake liners

Cook at 350F for 20 minutes.

Poke the cake or cupcakes centers with a toothpick to ensure it’s cooked through.

When used to make cupcakes this yields:

24 cupcakes - Bake at 350F for 20 minutes

1 - 9x13 sheet sheet cake - Bake at 350F for 25 minutes

2-Layer 9 inch round Cake layers - Bake at 350F for 30 minutes
