Minecraft birthday party food table with DIY decorations, themed snacks, and backyard party setup

When Jackson turned 8, we celebrated with a Minecraft-themed backyard birthday party, and it was honestly one of my favorite parties I’ve ever put together. Ok I might say that about every party haha but I did love this one.

Minecraft is something he is really into, which made this theme such an easy yes.

Not only did it make him incredibly excited for his party, but it also made decorating easier because I could use his toys as decorations, mix in budget-friendly party supplies, and create a party that felt personal and fun, rather than overcomplicated.

If you’re planning a Minecraft party (or any themed party), I’m sharing all the Minecraft birthday party ideas and details below, from decorations to food, activities, snacks, party favors, and lots of easy DIY ideas.

Our Minecraft Birthday Party Details

  • Birthday Age: 8
  • Location: Backyard
  • Guests: About 30 kids plus their parents
  • Party Style: Outdoor, casual, kid-friendly
  • Color Scheme: Green, brown, red (TNT-inspired)

Hosting the party outside gave us plenty of room for food tables, activities, and space for kids just to run around and be kids. We also set up some bounce houses and Connect Four for the kids to play.

Why I Love Throwing Parties Around What My Kids Love

One thing I love about throwing birthday parties is choosing themes that Jackson is genuinely into.

When you do that:

  • The party feels extra special for them
  • Their toys double as decorations
  • You save money on decor
  • Everything feels more personal and less staged

Minecraft was perfect because we could use his Minecraft figures, plushies, and blocks throughout the party, especially on the food table, and I didn’t have to spend a TON of money on decor that would end up taking up even more room in the garage.

Minecraft Party Decorations (Budget-Friendly Finds)

Most of the plates, balloons, and tablecloths came from local discount stores like The Anything Store and Tote Boys. These types of stores are some of my favorite places to shop for parties because they usually have themed items at great prices.

HOWEVER, you have to get lucky with these stores. They may or MAY NOT have anything you need. I got lucky and The Anything store had a TON of balloons, plates and tablecloths in my theme for CHEAP and then at Tote Boys, I went on $1 day each week and just looked for things I could turn into Minecraft party decor, haha.

Also Check out places like Walmart, Amazon and the Dollar Tree for items that can go with your theme!

Of course, y’all already know I love Dollar Tree for parties. It’s my go to for:

  • Coordinating colors
  • Simple decor
  • DIY supplies
  • Budget-friendly party basics like trays, chip bowls, plastic servingware etc.

Side note- don’t forget CLEARANCE sections! I found a Minecraft sword meant for room decor at Hobby Lobby for 75% off and used it to decorate at the party.

DIY Minecraft Decorations

  • Creeper Block: Wooden block from Dollar Tree painted green with a Creeper face
  • TNT Block: Foam block painted red with a printed TNT label

These blocks were placed on the food table and around the party. They were super easy to paint, and I loved adding them around the party for pops of Minecraft.

MOVIE POSTERS!

We found movie posters at 5 Below and Dollar Tree! They were great for decorations for the party!

Balloons: The Secret Weapon for Party Decorating on a Budget

If there’s one thing I always recommend when decorating for a party, it’s balloons.

Balloons can completely transform a space and pull an entire theme together — without costing a lot of money. For Jackson’s Minecraft birthday party, balloons played a huge role in making everything feel cohesive, festive, and fun.

Using shades of light green, dark green, and white, along with Creeper-themed balloons, instantly gave the party that Minecraft look. We didn’t need a fancy setup, just the right colors and a little creativity.

Why Balloons Work So Well for Themed Parties

  • They fill empty space quickly
  • They add height and dimension to tables and backdrops
  • They’re easy to customize to any color scheme
  • They make a big impact for a small cost

For this party, balloons were the centerpiece of the food table, highlighted the backdrop, and tied together all of the decor and themed food. Even simple tables instantly looked “party-ready” once the balloons were added.

Using "Balloon Sticks with Base” making Minecraft Balloon Bouquet type decoration

Those balloon stands were awesome! We did blow up some balloons with helium and tied them around the back yard but for some of the tables, we used these “Balloon Sticks with Base” – I’m not sure what to call them but you can make like a Balloon Bouquet type decoration. I’ve found these balloon stands at Dollar Tree and on Amazon.

Budget Balloon Tips I Swear By

  • Stick to 2–3 main colors that match your theme
  • Mix solid balloons with a few character or themed ones
  • Use balloon clusters instead of full arches to save money
  • Grab balloons from places like Dollar Tree, local party stores, or discount shops

You don’t need a huge balloon arch to make a statement. A few well-placed balloon bunches can completely change the look of your party space.

I got the “Number 8 Balloons 40 Inch, Giant Lime Green Pixel 8 Balloon” from Amazon

Party Planning Tip

If you’re trying to decorate on a budget, start with balloons first. Once those are in place, everything else, food, tables, and DIY decor, just falls into place around them.

Minecraft Food Table Setup

I always make the food table one of the main focal points of the party.

If you have a good, detailed, and decorated food table with the theme and balloons, that’s pretty much the star of the party in my opinion, haha. (I mean other than the birthday kid haha)

We used a Minecraft “Happy Birthday” backdrop, green balloon clusters (including Creeper balloons), and layered the table with Minecraft toys, DIY blocks, and themed signs.

Simple food + themed labels = a party win.

Minecraft Party Food:

Jackson’s Lava Chicken haha

The main food item was Jackson’s Lava Chicken — aka Chick-fil-A nugget party trays.

Ordering nugget trays was one of the best decisions. I normally cook but this saved me so much time and stress.

They were easy, kid-approved, and perfect for serving a crowd.

Jackson only wanted us to have foods that you could find in Minecraft, so that is what we went with, the following for his Minecraft birthday party food:

What We Served

  • Jackson’s Lava Chicken (chicken nuggets)
  • Chips (potatoes)
  • Baby carrots (& dip)
  • Apples
  • Watermelon

Everything was labeled with Minecraft-inspired signs, so even simple foods felt fun.

We also had some Creeper Lollipop Pops & TNT Candy Treats!

CREEPER LOLLIPOP POPS & TNT CANDY (TWIZZLERS)

These were some of the easiest DIY treats at the party:

  • Creeper Lollipop Pops:

@bigbearswife Creeper attack! 💚🍭 This DIY Minecraft party favor hack is so easy—just caramel apple suckers + Creeper stickers and you’ve got the coolest Minecraft birthday treat! 🎉 The kids went wild for these Creeper suckers, and they look like they came straight out of the game. • TNT Candy Packs:

No baking required, super budget-friendly, and they doubled as decor and treats.

Minecraft Cake & Desserts:

Normally I make Jackson’s cakes each year, (like the Mickey Pumpkin Cake I made for this first birthday or the pirate treasure map I made for his 4th), however…we were at Sam’s Club a few months before his party and he saw a Minecraft Cake in their cakebook and that was the end of that haha.

So we ordered Minecraft cupcakes for his class, and a Minecraft Cake and a Minecraft Cookie Cake for his party.

I was a little sad to not make his cake but in the long run it did save me time.

Minecraft Cake and Cookie Cake from Sam’s Club

Minecraft Cake Pops (Instead of Cookies!)

Usually, cookies are my goto dessert for birthday parties, well… I normally make them to match the theme as one of the “favors”, but this year I decided to switch things up and make Minecraft-themed cake pops instead and I’m so glad I did. They were such a fun change and didn’t stress me out, as decorating cookies does sometimes. haha

I made white cake pops and dipped them in white candy melts, then added a green candy melt drizzle to give them that Minecraft feel. To finish them off, I used Minecraft-themed sprinkles from Sprinkle Pop, which added the perfect pop of color and texture. I don’t think Sprinkle Pop carries this exact Minecraft sprinkle mix anymore, but you can find very similar Minecraft-style sprinkles on Amazon.

These cake pops were simple, cute, and easy to prep ahead of time, which is always a win when you’re hosting a party. They were a big hit with the kids (and parents) and made a fun alternative to our usual cookie setup.

✨ Would you want a step-by-step video showing how I made these Minecraft cake pops? Let me know in the comments or on social media, I’d love to share it if there’s interest!

Minecraft Crafting Table Snack Mix Station

Full snack mix station

One of the biggest hits of the party was the Minecraft Crafting Table Snack Mix Station.

Minecraft party snack mix ingredients labeled as TNT, slimeballs, snowballs, and other Minecraft items

Kids could “craft” their own snack mix by scooping their favorite items into bags to take home.

Snack labels included:

  • TNT (red licorice – Twizzlers)
  • Snowballs (mini marshmallows)
  • Trap Door (pretzel squares)
  • Sticks (pretzel sticks)
  • Fire (cheese balls)
  • Fish (Goldfish crackers)
  • Cookies (mini cookies)
  • Slimeballs (green cereal)

This worked as both a snack to take home and an activity.

Minecraft coloring pages and activity books set up for a kids birthday party
@bigbearswife For Jackson’s Minecraft birthday party, I set up a DIY Minecraft Trail Mix Station 🎉⛏️ and it was a HUGE hit with the kids! Everyone got to grab a bag and build their own custom trail mix with Minecraft-inspired snacks: 🟩 🟩 🟩 🧨 Twizzlers = TNT 🔥 Cheese Balls = Fire ❄️ Mini Marshmallows = Snowballs 🪵 Pretzel Sticks = Sticks 🥨 Pretzel Squares = Trap Doors 🟢Wicked Cereal = SlimeBalls 🐠 Goldfish Crackers = Fish 🍪 Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies = Minecraft Cookies 🟩 🟩 🟩 #MinecraftBirthday #MinecraftPartyIdeas #DIYTrailMixStation #KidsPartyIdeas #MinecraftSnacks ♬ Subwoofer Lullaby – C418

Minecraft Coloring Station

We also set up a Minecraft coloring table with:

  • Minecraft coloring books
  • Printable Minecraft coloring pages
  • Crayons

This was perfect for kids who needed a quieter activity or arrived early.

Minecraft Piñata Setup

  • TNT piñata was used as decor
  • Green Creeper piñata (from Walmart) was used for the actual activity

Using one for decor and one for play worked really well.

TNT piñata decor

We had originally bought the TNT piñata from the local Mexican grocery store, but I loved it so much that we used it for decor and bought a Green Creeper piñata from Walmart for the kids to destroy.

Minecraft Party Favors

Earlier in the summer, McDonald’s had Minecraft Happy Meal boxes, and instead of tossing them, we saved them. I saved them, family saved them, friends saved a bunch and by the time the party got here, we had PLENTY!

Minecraft Favor boxes lined up

They turned into the perfect party favor boxes.

Each box included things like:

  • Mini Minecraft Figure (from Dollar Tree!)
  • Mini 3D-printed axolotls
  • Minecraft tattoos
  • Minecraft glasses
  • Minecraft Stickers
  • Candy

They doubled as decor and favors, which I loved.

This Minecraft birthday party was such a fun way to celebrate Jackson turning 8, and it really did come together so well.

At the end of the Minecraft adventures, this Minecraft birthday party wasn’t about perfection; it was about celebrating Jackson and what he truly loves. Using his toys as decorations, keeping the food simple, and mixing DIY ideas with budget-friendly finds made party planning feel fun instead of stressful.

Minecraft birthday party - Jackson turns 8

If you’re planning a birthday party for your own kiddo, lean into what they’re excited about right now. It makes the party more meaningful, more affordable, and honestly… way more fun for everyone.

I think the most time-consuming part (other than decorating the back yard) was the time I took to make a block chicken out of cardboard boxes and Jackson’s “Lava Chicken” Sign for the food table.

And if you’re looking for more Minecraft party ideas, food inspiration, and printables, I’ve linked things into the post to help you plan with confidence. If you have any questions, just leave me a comment!
