This fun Christmas dessert turned up around the 1950s and is also known as Stained Glass Cake or Crown Jewel Cake. Not only is this dessert super pretty to look at but it’s also a great recipe for kids to help with in the kitchen!
The only part of this dessert that required heat is boiling the pineapple juice. Little ones can help mix the Jell-O and assemble this fun dessert.

Crust:
- Vanilla Wafers, crushed
- Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
- unsalted butter, melted
Filling:
- Strawberry Jell-O gelatin
- Lime Jell-O gelatin
- boiling water, divided
- envelope unflavored gelatin
- cold water
- pineapple juice
- whipped topping, thawed

How to make Broken Glass Cake:
- Make red Jell-O
In a medium bowl, whisk together Strawberry Jell-O gelatin and 1 1/4 cup boiling water.
Whisk for 3 minutes or until dissolved.
Pour into loaf pan or pie dish. You want it to be deep enough to make a sheet of Jell-O that you can cut into cubes once it is firm.
Chill 4 hours or until firm.
Don’t follow the recipe on the box – we need this Jell-O to be thicker so that we can cube it for the dessert! - Make Green Jell-O
Repeat same process for Lime Lime Jell-O.
- Make Crust
Once Jell-O is firm, start on crust.
Follow directions in recipe for making the Vanilla Wafer crust and press into a casserole dish. - Cut Jell-O into cubes
Remove Jell-O from fridge and cut into small cubes.
- Make Pineapple Whipped Topping
Follow recipe to make pineapple whipped topping.
- Add green Jell-O
Toss green cubes into pineapple mixture, leaving a few out for the top.
- Add in Red Jell-O cubes.

- Stir
Stir it all up.
- Fill casserole dish.
Spoon mixture over Vanilla Wafer crust.
- Decorate
Top with extra Jell-O cubes.
- Chill before serving
Chill for 4 hours before slicing to serve.
