Can I Leave Out The Red Velvet Cake Mix?
You can, BUT red food coloring is very bitter unless you find “no taste” red food coloring. The Red velvet cake mix will help turn it red.
I recommend using the red velvet food cake mix to get the rich red color for this Halloween treat.
Now what to do with that leftover cake mix?
You’ll have some leftover cake mix. So what do you do with it?
You can make a second batch of Halloween rice krispie treats.
Use it to make no churn red velvet ice cream, using this recipe I used for Birthday Cake Ice Cream.
Make Red Velvet Dip!
How To Make Raw Meat Halloween Rice Krispie Treats:
-
Melt the butter in a large pot and add the marshmallows. Stir until they are all melted!
-
Add red velvet cake mix and stir until incorporated. If adding red food coloring, add 2-3 drops here. Don’t add a lot because red food coloring is bitter.
-
Add cereal and stir to combine until all cereal is red.
-
Scoop, red cereal into lumps (about the size of ground burger packing) on parchment paper. I placed the foam trays beside the parchment paper to make sure I was getting a good size.
DON’T put the HOT cereal on the foam tray or it will melt into the tray. -
Let them cool before wrapping.
-
Serve as is or wrap them in plastic wrap and add a spooky label. You can find free printable links below.

Hi, when printing the labels they are too large and I can’t reduce the size to fit on a sticky label (1/2 sheet 8 1/2 x 11) ;-(
Hi Sue! You’ll need to put them into a program like WordPress and make them whatever size you want before printing. If I have time today I’ll make up a sheet with all of them for a 8 1/2 by 11. I did the images the way they are so people could size them however they wanted before printing.
oh my gosh, thank you for this recipe! I just finished making 100 of these for a Halloween Party at my campground!
I hope everyone loved them!!
I made this tonight and added a tablespoon of chocolate syup to make it darker but my husband said it looked better without the food coloring or the syrup.
Can I make these ahead of time and freeze them?
I’ve never frozen rice krispie treats, but I did Google it and it looks like you should be able to. I found this:
Yes, you can freeze Rice Krispie treats and they can retain their quality for up to six months if stored properly. Here are some tips for freezing Rice Krispie treats:
Cool completely
Before freezing, allow the treats to cool completely.
Store in layers
Place the treats in layers separated by wax paper in an airtight container.
Thaw before serving
Before serving, let the treats stand at room temperature for about 15 minutes to an hour.
Freeze in plastic bags
You can also wrap each square in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag
Thank you for sharing. This is so cute! can you tell me what font you used for the labels please?
