Hey Y’all, I’m Angie and this is my little space on the internet!
Most of my days are spent thinking of new recipes and dreaming of traveling the world. Here on my blog, BigBearsWife.com, you’ll find some of our favorite recipes that I’ve collected and developed over the years, southern favorites from my grandmother’s recipe boxes and a few fun little posts about trips I’ve made around the country.
I live on the Virginia North Carolina line, about 2 hours from Raleigh, North Carolina, with my husband and our two dogs. We also share our wonderful live with our little boy, Jackson! It took us ten years of praying for him but he is finally here.
We’ve moved from our sweet loft apartment that was inside of an old tobacco warehouse downtown to a new house in July 2018. We became home owners again and now we are the proud owners of a 1943 stone fairytale storybook cottage! While I still plan to move us to Wilmington, NC one day to live by the beach, I’m pretty happy with where we are living right now.
I also love Paris and New Orleans. (two cities that I can’t wait to visit again)
Halloween is my favorite Holiday and Christmas is a close second.
Unlike a lot of food bloggers I didn’t grow up with a background in cooking. My life didn’t revolve around food or the kitchen until I got married. Sure I loved a good mac and cheese growing up but I wasn’t always in the kitchen. I have a few memories of my Nana in the kitchen and a few of Papa making Sausage Gravy and Biscuits as well as memories of my Ma making Broccoli Casserole for every holiday but that’s about it.
I became obsessed with cooking when I decided to become the “perfect housewife”.
I married my sweetheart in February 3, 2007.
When we got married I started to teach myself to cook because I didn’t want to live off of boxed food, take out and frozen pizza. I also wanted my husband to eat something other than “steak and potato”, that’s all he ever wanted to eat. I’m proud to say that he now eats broccoli and steamed spinach; I never thought that would happen. 🙂
I started this blog back in 2009, as a way to save the recipes that I loved to make. By January 2009, we had only been married for 2 years and we were already living in our 2nd house. We were getting ready to move again, this time back home to Virginia because Thomas, my husband, was getting out of the military.
I had been writing recipes down in a notebook and had dozens of recipes that were printed out and stuffed into a folder. Needless to say they were a mess and every time I packed up boxes to move houses, I seemed to lose half of them. One night while watching the Food Network, I learned about a food blog called “Peanut Butter and Julie” and immediately went to my computer and looked it up. I feel in love with the blog and knew that I wanted to start one to keep all of my recipes in one place! Originally I thought I’d use it just as a online “searchable” place to keep them and it has turned into so much more.
Once I got into food blogging a little more, I found Amanda B’s site, Kevin and Amanda. When I found her site I just fell in love with her recipes, photographs and style. She probably thought I was crazy but she was so sweet and answered a lot of e-mails when I had questions about certain things on her blog and how to make some things work on mine. I finally got to meet Amanda at Food Blog Forum this past May and she’s just as sweet in person.
In 2013, Amanda from Amanda’s Cookin took me under her wing and taught me so much about the Food Blogging word. From photography tips, to cooking tips, to PR tips, she’s taught me a ton! I am so glad that I can call her my friend. Glad I was able to meet her at Food Blog Forum 2012!! I don’t know where I’d be without her!
Sharing recipes with people makes me smile and I love it when family and friends come to me with questions about cooking or baking!
