Fruit filled crisp desserts are so easy to make and I really love them because you can use all kinds of fruits to create a dessert that is perfect for your taste! Apple crisps were one of my favorite go-to desserts for years but today we’re adding blackberries to it and it is so deliciously perfect. I love how tart and bubbly the blackberries are after being baked.
What kind of apples should I use for a crisp?
I would suggest using honeycrisp apples or golden delicious apples for crisps. They both hold up great for baking. Just make sure to slice them thin before baking them in the pie so that they get super soft.
Do I really need to peel the apples for this recipe?
In my opinion, Yes! I just don’t love baked apple peels in my crisp desserts, but if you’re ok with them you can leave them on.
Does this recipe REALLY need the sugar and lemon juice mixed in with the apples and blackberries?
YES! I tried it both ways. You need the sugar and lemon juice to help pull the juices from the blackberries when baked.
When I tried the recipe without the sugar and lemon juice with the apples and blackberries, I ended up with a super DRY crisp filling.

How To Make Apple Blackberry Crisp: A Step By Step Guide:
-
We’re baking this crisp at 350F, so go ahead and preheat the oven.
-
Core, peel, and thinly slice apples. I use one of those apple cutters that slice and core the apple at the same time. It makes pretty thick slices so I just cut those in half. You don’t want the apple slices too big or they won’t cook completely in the allotted time.
-
Toss the apple slices and blackberries into a bowl.
-
Sprinkle with sugar and mix. This will help draw the juices out of the blackberries. If you leave this and the lemon juice out, you may end up with a very bone dry crisp filling.
-
Pour into a deep dish pie dish or a baking dish.
-
Make the topping mixture according to recipe directions.
-
Bake according to recipe directions and let cool.
-
Perfect served as is but even better with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

Recipe calls for 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, divided. What amount goes with the filling and what goes in the topping or how is it divided? Question is about the Apple Blackberry Crisp.
Thanks
Hi Wanda! It should be “Add in lemon juice and 1/4 cup granulated sugar. Stir to combine.” Sorry about that.
