Cake mix cookies with a Halloween flair, that’s what we’re making today! These cake mix cookies are easy enough for kids to help with and only take about 30 minutes from start to finish.
My 2 year old is obsessed with cake mix cookies and I can’t blame him. These cookies are amazing, soft and just perfect. We’ve added spooky blood shot eyes to these cake mix cookies which makes them perfect for any Halloween party!
What you’ll need to make Cake Mix BloodShot Eyeball Cookies:
- white cake mix or yellow cake mix
- eggs
- vegetable oil
- Red food coloring (not taste red is best)
- candy eyeballs
Which Red Food Coloring to use for desserts:
Red Food coloring is bitter. It just is and most if the time if you add a ton of red food coloring to something it ends up just not tasting very good. That’s what I use the No Taste Red food coloring when I’m making red desserts.
There is no point in making cute desserts if they’re going to taste gross and regular red food coloring taste awful to me. Wilton has a good one that I normally use but there are probably some other brands no taste red food coloring out there as well.
Making the bloodshot part of the cookies:
The bloodshot cookies get their red swirl blood shot look from just a few dabs of red food coloring mixed into the cookie dough.
When you get to this stage of the recipe, mix everything (except the food coloring) until fully combined and thick like dough.
Add a few more drops of red food coloring to the dough now and slightly stir just to mix in some stripes of red. Don’t over mix or the red will fade and just turn the dough pink.
Then Drop 2 tablespoon sized cookie dough balls onto a prepared baking sheet. Space each cookie about 2 inches apart.
This is what the cookies will look like before and after being baked.
Candy Eyeballs for Halloween Cookies:
The eyes for these cookies on after they’ve been baked.
Normally I put the sprinkles and decorations on cake mix cookies before they’re baked but for these eyeball cookies, they’re going on afterwards.
These particular candy eyes are from Wilton (I also used this brand and type for my Bloodshot Eyeball Apple Slices) They’re hard(ish) royal icing decorations and hold up well to being pressed into a hot cookie.
You could also try Gummy eyeballs like I used for my BloodShoot Chocolate Apple recipe, but I haven’t tried them with cake mix cookies so I’m not 100% sure the cookie will cool fast enough for them not to melt.
If you’re looking to make your own Royal Icing candy eyes, my friend Renee has a tutorial on her blog on how to make homemade royal icing eyes from scratch.
