Gingerbread Men Cookies have always been such a classic Christmas cookie in my eyes. They’re so simple yet so pretty. While I’ve made gingerbread cookies in the past, I bought a sweet little gingerbread man cookie cutter earlier this year and it’s been sitting in my kitchen window seal just waiting for Christmas to get here. So Jackson and I baked up some Classic Gingerbread Men Cookies the other day and I thought I’d share our favorite Classic Gingerbread Men Cookie recipe with y’all!
What you’ll need for Classic Gingerbread Men Cookies: (amounts below in recipe)
- butter, softened
- white sugar
- molasses
- eggs
- vanilla extract
- all purpose flour
- salt
- baking soda
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
Do I need to sift the dry ingredients for these cookies?
You don’t have too! If you don’t own a sifter or a fine-mesh strainer don’t worry. Just whisk everything together a few times with a fork or a whisk and it’ll be fine. I really just like to sift the flour and spices together to get everything mixed together.
I bought this fine-mesh strainer from the dollar store haha. I just measure everything into it above a mixing bowl and then just shake it into the bowl to mix it together.
How thick should I roll out the cookie dough for Classic Gingerbread Men Cookies?
When I’m making these gingerbread men cookies I try to roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick. Sometimes it’s a little more and sometimes a little less because I don’t normally break out the ruler to measure my cookie dough.
These gingerbread men will puff a little when baked but they’re not going to rise a ton.
What should I use to decorate classic gingerbread men cookies?
If I’m just making 1 batch of gingerbread men, I will normally just used store bought white cookie icing. Its found in most grocery stores in the baking section and normally it cost just a few dollars.
If I’m making a couple of batches of gingerbread men then my Royal Icing Recipe is my go to cookie decorating icing.
How do I use this classic gingerbread men cookie recipe to make Gingerbread Men Cookie Ornaments for the Christmas Tree?
This gingerbread man cookie recipe holds up very nicely but I only bake them for about 10 minutes if I’m going to serve them as cookies to eat.
If you want to make some to decorate the tree with, make the recipe as is but bake them for 3-5 minutes longer to make them a bit crispier.
Also, don’t forget to poke a hole in the top of the cookie with a chop stick or a straw BEFORE baking if you want a hole for ribbon to hang it on the tree.
