How To Make This Buckeyes Recipe:
-
Once you’ve made the peanut butter mixture, pop it into the fridge for about 30 minutes to chill.
-
When time it up, take 1 tablespoon worth of dough and roll it in your hand until soft. Then roll into a ball. *dough may be crumbly when you remove it from the fridge but the heat from your hand will held smooth it out*
-
Do this for the rest of the dough, placing them on a parchment paper lined flat surface.
-
Melt chocolate candy coating according to package directions. This is normally 30 second intervals in the microwave until melted and smooth.
-
Use a toothpick and press it into top of peanut butter ball.
-
Use the toothpick to dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate and tap off excess.
Make sure not to dip the entire peanut butter ball and leave the circle of peanut butter at the top to create the classic look of the buckeye candies. -
Place onto the parchment paper and let sit until chocolate hardens.
-
If you want the hole in the top of the buckeyes removed, just use your finger to gently move the peanut butter mixture around to fill the hole. The heat from your finger will help it mold together.
Now they’re ready for your next party or for gift giving!
Why Are These Called Buckeyes?
Buckeye candies are called Buckeyes because they look like the nuts of the Ohio state tree. The buckeye nut got its name because it resembles the shape and color of a deer…therefore…buckeyes.
Can I Use Crunchy Peanut Butter for Buckeyes?
I’m not going to tell you that you can’t but, I wouldn’t recommend it. These homemade candies should be soft and smooth. Crunchy peanut butter is going to give them a bit of a texture and crunch.
