Superman Ice Cream in a Cake Cone

This red, yellow and blue Superman Ice Cream is popular in the Midwest, thought to be from Detroit but found all over the United States in ice cream shops!

You don’t need an ice cream maker for this recipe because it’s one of my no churn ice cream recipes and you’re going to love it making this super easy rainbow ice cream at home.

This Ice cream is so for for kids to help with in the kitchen and they’ll love the bright colors! If you’re not crazy about the red, yellow and blue color scheme you can always change up the food coloring to create your own color combinations!

Ingredients For No Churn Superman Ice Cream:

  • heavy cream
  • vanilla extract
  • Dixie Crystals Confectioners Powdered Sugar
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • raspberry extract
  • banana extract
  • strawberry extract
  • Blue food coloring
  • Red food coloring
  • Yellow food coloring

(I just used the McCormick liquid food coloring)

Ingredient amounts and entire recipe directions can be found on Dixie Crystals Website (Recipe Link At Bottom of post)

How To Make This No Churn Superman Ice Cream Recipe:

  1. First step to making a no churn ice cream is to make the base of the ice cream. This starts by whipping the heavy cream with an electric mixer until it gets pretty stiff. You’re going to want stiff peaks at this point.
whipping cream in a mixing bowl for ice cream base

  2. Then you’re going to want to add the powdered sugar and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk until combined. This is what is going to sweeten that ice cream base. adding condensed milk and sugar

  3. Now this is where you determine what flavor you’re going to make.
We’re making superman ice cream, so divide the ice cream base into three bowls.

  4. Add a few drops of blue food coloring, the raspberry extract and the vanilla extract to the first bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined. This is our Blue or “Blue Moon” flavor.

  5. Add a few drops of yellow food coloring and banana extract to the second bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined.
Banana Ice Cream Yellow Food Coloring and Banana flavoring

  6. Add a few drops of red food coloring and strawberry extract to the third bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined.Strawberry ice cream red food coloring and strawberry extract

  7. Now we have our three colors that are needed for the Superman Ice Cream. Yellow, Red and Blue! Now the amount of food coloring you add it up to you but I try not to add too much as food coloring can make desserts bitter.

Also, YES..the red is more of a pink BUT at the ice cream parlor the red is also more of a pink than a deep red. 3 colors for Superman Ice Cream

  8. Dollop all three colors, randomly into a loaf pan until pan is full. Tap pan on counter to remove any air bubbles.

You could also use a knife to swirl the colors together a little but I like the look of the ice cream when the colors are just kind if plopped in the pan together.

  9. Freeze for several hours or overnight until frozen.

Why Is Superman Ice Cream Called Superman Ice Cream?

So, you would think that Superman Ice Cream is named after the DC Comics Superhero that shared the same super name, wouldn’t you? It is not. I know! I thought that was odd too.

The Hero, Superman, came to be in 1938 but the ice cream is thought to have come from an ice cream shop (Stroh’s Ice Cream Shop) in Detroit, Michigan in the 1920s during the prohibition era when they were trying to figure out how to keep their business from going under.

What Are The Flavors That Make Up Superman Ice Cream?

The flavors of Superman ice cream are different depending on where you get your ice cream from but the colors always remain the same. Red, Yellow and Blue.

So flavors….

The Blue is normally a mystery. Most people call it “Blue Moon Ice Cream” which is a combination of raspberry (blue raspberry) and vanilla (which is what I used here).

Red can be flavors like, strawberry, cherry, black cherry or fruit punch. I used strawberry for this one.

Yellow flavors can be, banana, lemon, or vanilla. I went with banana for this version.

So this isn’t just one ice cream flavor, it’s three of them swirled together.

Raspberry, Vanilla, Strawberry and Banana – the flavors I used but you could use different flavors for this ice cream.

Why Isn’t The Red , SUPER RED?

I didn’t make the red SUPER red because red food coloring really makes food bitter and I didn’t want bitter ice cream. Plus all of the superman ice creams that I’ve seen in the ice cream parlors and in the grocery stores all have the “Red” as more of a pink and I wanted this to match that. You can get a no taste red food coloring if you want more of a red, red coloring but you’ll need to add a lot of food coloring to turn the white base into a dark red.

What Size Pan Should I Put This No Churn Ice Cream In?

I like to use a standard size loaf pan when I make no churn ice cream. Glass loaf pans can be used but I find that the ice cream freezes better in a metal type loaf pan.
