The Magic of Old Bay
The magic of Old Bay lies in its ability to elevate any dish to new heights of flavor. This iconic blend of spices has been enchanting taste buds for decades, and when combined with the richness of crab and the freshness of spinach and artichoke, it creates a culinary masterpiece that is simply irresistible. But what makes Old Bay so special? Let’s uncover the secrets behind this beloved seasoning and discover why it is the perfect match for our Crab Spinach Artichoke Dip.
At the heart of Old Bay is a harmonious medley of spices that work together in perfect harmony. The blend of celery salt, paprika, black and red pepper, and other secret ingredients creates a symphony of flavors that dance on your tongue. With just one taste, you’ll understand why Old Bay has become a staple in kitchens across the country, particularly in coastal regions where seafood reigns supreme.
But Old Bay is more than just a seasoning – it’s a passport to the Chesapeake Bay, where it originated. The blend was first created in the 1940s by a German immigrant, Gustav Brunn, who wanted to capture the essence of the Bay’s unique flavors. Today, Old Bay is not only a beloved flavor enhancer but also a symbol of tradition, nostalgia, and the pride of the Chesapeake Bay region.
When combined with crab, Old Bay truly showcases its magic. The sweet and delicate flavor of crabmeat is enhanced by the spices in Old Bay, creating a taste sensation that is both familiar and extraordinary. It’s a match made in flavor heaven, with each ingredient working in perfect harmony to create a dish that is greater than the sum of its parts.
And let’s not forget about the spinach and artichoke, the perfect partners in this culinary affair. The earthy bitterness of spinach and the tangy sweetness of artichoke add depth and complexity to the dip, balancing out the richness of the crab and the spices of Old Bay. Together, these ingredients create a dip that is creamy, flavorful, and utterly addictive.
The Spinach Artichoke Twist is not just about taste; it’s a feast for the eyes as well. The combination of vibrant greens, creamy white, and the occasional glimpse of reddish-orange crab creates a visual spectacle that is hard to resist. It’s a dip that demands attention, beckoning you to dip your chip and savor its enticing colors along with its incredible flavors.
Indeed, when we put it all together, the result is a dip that is not only irresistibly delicious but also visually stunning.
In the world of flavor sensations, there is a match made in heaven that simply cannot be overlooked: Old Bay and Crab Spinach Artichoke Dip.
How To Make Old Bay Crab Spinach Artichoke Dip:
-
Preheat oven to 350F.
-
Stir together first 6 ingredients until smooth.

-
Fold in spinach, artichokes and crab meat until well combined.
-
Pour into a 9 inch pie dish or 8×8 baking dish.

Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes. * I recommend placing your pie dish or baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet when baking as sometimes this dip may bubble over and it will keep your oven clean*
Great served with ritz crackers or tortilla chips!
Tips and Tricks For This Hot Crab Dip:
Make Sure to Drain Spinach!
This recipe calls for frozen spinach that has been thawed and drained. Spinach retains a lot of water when cooked and frozen. So you’ll want to make sure that once the spinach is thawed that you wrap it in a clean dish towel or cheesecloth and squeeze it tight to squeeze as much of the water out as you can. You may need to do this 2 or 3 times.
You don’t want to add watery spinach to the dip as it’ll cause the dip to be watery.
Check That Crab Meat For Shells!
When you buy lump crabmeat that’s already been packaged for cooking, you may think you’re safe from shells. However, you should always run your fingers through crab meat to feel for shells and broken pieces of claw before adding the crab meat to anything you’re making.
Sometimes it just slips through when it is processed and you don’t want any shell to accidentally make it into your dish!
Ps. I have not made this dip with fresh FRESH crabmeat because we don’t live in an area where I can get live crabs but I’m sure it would be amazing with fresh crab meat!
