Last week was a super short work week for me and since we closed the office yesterday, that means this week is a short one as well. YAY!
I took time this weekend to get a lot of cleaning done at the house. I also worked on a few recipe ideas, got to have lunch/girl time with Crystal, and Thomas and I worked on our back yard and deck/patio.
On Saturday I had a movie date with my honey. We went to see Fast and Furious 6 and as always I loved it. I know that some people don’t care for those movies but I personally have loved all of them (I think Toyko Drift was my favorite though). I think it’s the music and cars that pulls me in. I do however wish they’d show off more cars like they did the the first few movies 😉 After that, the day was filled with boring cleaning.
On Sunday I shared my #SundaySupper recipe for the week. I’ve missed out on #SundaySupper for the past few weeks because of trips, work and a general busy, hectic schedule. I’m glad to be back! Our theme for last Sunday was “Picnic Foods”, so I shared my new favorite sandwich! It’s a Chicken Salad, Avocado and Cheese sub that I based on a great sandwich I had at a local restaurant.
Sunday also included a sushi lunch date with my Crystal. We talked a lot, enjoyed lunch and then got to do a little shopping. Well, “window shopping” but that’s still fun. 🙂 During our little shopping trip I did find a few pieces of patio furniture that I really liked. Thomas and I ended up going back to Target to get it that afternoon.
I have wanted a patio for cookouts and relaxation for a few years now and we finally moved into a house that has one! We cleaned it up and now I have a deck space that I just love. I found these pretty blue chairs and the matching umbrella at our local Target. The chairs were a pretty good price with the buy one get one 50% off deal. Normally I only buy things at Target when they’re on sale haha. 🙂
We set up everything and had our first holiday cookout/dinner of the year. I love being able to have parties and dinners at our house now! Finally a place to call home, somewhere that makes me want to invite people over.
We kept the dinner for Memorial day pretty simple. I didn’t really “decorate” much. I just used a few flags that I had in the craft room. (Since Thomas was in the military, I always seem to have patriotic stuff stored away)
I grabbed a few hanging pots of Gerbera daisies and an orange lily from Lowes.
Thomas attached our Tiki torches to the deck since I can’t stick them into the ground on the deck haha (no fear, Thomas is a firefighter and they won’t be burning unless someone is out there so I feel completely safe with them attached there) We got the tiki touches at Target at the end of summer last year when they were on sale, a pack of two came out to $1.50, I think. Maybe $1.58, but who’s counting those 8 pennies.
Our Menu for the evening consisted of:
(If I have a recipe for it, you can click on the link to get it)
BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches with slaw and Kings Hawaiian Sandwich buns
Corn on the Cob **
(**with Mexican cheese and mayo on the side* don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it)
Baked Beans
Buffalo Cauliflower with celery (recipe from Gina at SkinnyTaste.com)
Patriotic Pasta Salad (recipe will be on the Family Dollar website soon, I’ll link it when it’s up)
Peach Tea
Sweet Tea
and Watermelon and Pineapple for dessert.
Ok, well it’s a bit more than just BBQ but that’s a low key menu for me haha.
Oh and one last things before I forget. My love of mason jars continues to grow. I got a few mason jars from the dollar store yesterday and a few 97 cents solar lights from Walmart and made these solar light mason jars to line the base of our deck. I saw the idea on Pinterest and forgot to get the directions.
So I kind of just winged it, but they turned out just as I wanted! I just popped the yard stake off of the solar light, put it inside of the mason jar, screws on the lid and then sat the mason jars upside on the deck. I used them to light the base of the railing, the gate and I’m going to make some more to light the steps that go from the deck to the patio. (Lots of steps and zero light right now!)
So how was your weekend? Did you Thank a serviceman or servicewoman this weekend? Did you spend time with family? Did you cookout?
