Recipe At Bottom of Post
Slow cooker recipes are always popular but I think they’re even more popular during fall and winter because they give you the sense of creating a warm and cozy meal! This 1980s Slow Cooker Chicken and Stuffing is exactly that. It’s super easy to toss together and the slow cooker does all of the cooking for you!
So why did I add 1980’s into the title of this recipe? haha The first time I made this slow cooker chicken recipe it 100% reminded me of something my mom would have made for us when we were growing up in the 80s and 90s. I made it for her when she was over for dinner the other night and she agreed. This chicken recipe it’s now officially a 1980s recipe in our house. 🙂
What you’ll need for 1980s Slow Cooker Chicken and Stuffing
- boneless, skinless chicken breasts

- milk
- stuffing mix
- chicken broth
How to make 1980s Slow Cooker Chicken and Stuffing:
In a bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup and milk.
Add stuffing mix and chicken broth to bowl and mix.
Place chicken breasts into bowl of slow cooker.
Spread over sauce over chicken.
Spoon stuffing over chicken.
Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.
Homemade or Store bought Cream of Chicken Soup for this recipe?
You can use either for this recipe. I used canned the last time we made this but a homemade cream of chicken soup would be great as well. If you need a homemade recipe, Christy from SouthernPlate.com has a great recipe for Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup.
Also, the original recipe called for water but I used chicken broth instead. If you don’t cook with a lot of salt you may want to use water or low sodium chicken broth. Mom and Thomas love this recipe with the chicken broth but sometimes depending on the brand I buy it can be a tad bit salty for my taste buds.

I add broccoli to mine.
Angie says
that’s a great idea!
Kelli says
Can I put it on high for 3-4 hours?
Angie says
Hi Kelli, I haven’t made it that way before so I’m not 100% sure but if you try it, let me know how it works out for 3 on high <3
Janet Bradley says
If the broccoli is added, is it fresh or frozen?
Angie says
I haven’t tried it with the broccoli but If I were going to make it with broccoli, I would probably use frozen.
Shelly says
Is the cream of chicken condensed? I have cream of chicken soup that isn’t condensed. Will that work?
Angie says
Shelly, as long as it’s a thick cream soup it should be fine. Although I’ve not sure if I’ve even seen a canned cream of chicken soup that wasn’t labeled as condense soup around here. haha. What brand is it?
Summer says
What are the serving size for the dish and what can u use if you don’t have cream of chicken soup I only have 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
Angie says
Hi Summer! It calls for 3 -4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts and yields 4 servings. A serving size is about 1 chicken breast per person. When I make it I section the dish into 4th and serve it. I normally get enough for my husband, myself, husband’s lunch for the next day and the 4th serving I normally divide into 2 or 3 tiny servings for our toddler.
You could use cream of mushroom in place of the chicken soup 🙂
Kristin Sparrow says
I make this as well…I usually use cream of mushroom soup. I have also used water instead of chicken broth
Pam says
You can make your own cream of chicken soup look on Pinterest
Hayley says
Should I use thawed chicken breast? Or is frozen ok.
Angie says
You can use either. I normally use thawed because of the conflicting information out there about cooking frozen chicken breast in the slow cooker. But as far as cook time and tempature, it should be find to switch it out.
Kayla says
Hi! I don’t have a slow cooker…but I do have an Instant Pot. Is there a way to convert? Thanks!
Angie says
Hi Kayla! I haven’t made this in an instant pot yet but if you have an Instant Pot you can use it as a slow cooker. It has a slow cooker feature on it 🙂
Linda Zee says
I made this. Mine looked nothing like the pictures on here. All the stuffing turned to mush down in the gravy. It tastes great but it certainly isn’t as pretty as pictured. I served it with rice and it was very good.
Angie says
Sorry it didn’t turn out looking the same. Sometimes when I make it, it looks like the picture and sometimes when I make it, it looks like a chicken stuffing gravy mashup haha. I like the idea of serving it with rice!
Katie says
Same here 🙁 I followed the recipe, and it turned into a pile of mush well before cooking time was up. Too bad.
Diane says
Ok so I doubled the recipe added peas and carrots and in the last hour I put the stuffing and shut it off . Came out fantastic
Angie says
That sounds wonderful! I love the idea of adding the peas and carrots!
Naomi says
This was a great recipe. I added some chopped onion to the stuffing mixture before putting in the crockpot. I also added some mixed veggies in the last hour. I was able to use up some food in my freezer/pantry and I have lunch for the week.
Angie says
So glad you liked it!
Deanna A Jones says
Can I use chicken thighs, instead.
Angie says
You can 🙂
Austin says
Can I use stove top stuffing mix for this?
Angie says
You sure can!
Cassandra says
Can I double the stuffing to 12 ounces an add more broth to it? My family loves stuffing an 6ounces probably won’t be enough. Or should I make some extra on the side?
Angie says
You can! Or make it on the side. Whichever should be fine.
Judy Geagley says
Can you use the bag stuffing mix & how much would you use ??
Angie says
You should be able to use bagged stuffing for this recipe. I haven’t tested it but it should be the same, 6 ounces.
Sue Schubert says
My family did not care for this. Followed the recipe EXACTLY and the stuffing was soupy and the flavor was only OK. This kind of post makes me sad as we’re expecting to find tried, true and delicious recipes on Pinterest, obviously this was not tested before posting.
Angie says
Hi Sue. I’m sorry you didn’t like the recipe but I do hate that you decided to leave with the comment “obviously this was not tested before posting.” Because it was. obviously this recipe was tested because I made it and took the photos in the post. Over the past 12 years of blogging I’ve always found that anyone that tells me they followed the recipes exactly or to the “T”, are normally the ones that change something in the recipe. I’m ok with anyone saying that they didn’t care for a recipe of mine as all tastebuds are different. I do however, care if someone tells people that my recipes are not tested, as I know they are.
Amanda says
Just made this tonight and it was easy and delicious.
Looking at some of the comments about it being mushy/messy, I’m wondering if people may be combining the milk, soup, broth & stuffing mix all together? In the narrative of your post I could see how someone might miss the step to pour the milk/soup over the chicken and then mix the broth/stuffing separately and spoon it on top (this feels very clear in the recipe instructions but less clear above).
No changes made, followed your recipe exactly and it was a hit!! Thank you!!
Diane Johnson says
I made it and it turned out perfect! ❤️❤️
Krista says
Is there anything you’d do differently if the chicken is not thawed? I spaced taking chicken out of the freezer.
Angie says
Frozen won’t be an issue. 6 hours in the slow cooker should be fine. You may just need to let it cook a little longer but check it at 6 hours.
Joey says
Easy and great flavor. Followed recipe exactly. Only issue I had was dressing (6oz box of stove top) was a little runny. Next time I will lesson ck broth.
Amy says
I used two boxes of stuffing and added 1/2 cup of melted butter to the 1 2/3 cup chicken broth. Turned out perfect. (we love stuffing!) Green beans on the side and was a lovely meal.
Gregory Parlier says
Can you shred the chicken up or do you need to leave it whole?
Angie says
Do you mean before or after cooking? After cooking, you can shred it up and enjoy however you’d like 🙂
