WHAT WE USE FOR OUR BEER CAN CHICKEN:
Now you can use any brands you want, but these are what we use for now. I say for now because we’re always switching up our seasonings and well when I cook with beer, I just grab whatever for recipes like this.
I had Budweiser at the house from when I was making a bunch of beer bread so that’s what I used. This seasoning is what we’ve been using on chicken lately and it’s fantastic!

How to make Oven Roasted Beer Can Chicken from scratch:
- PREPARING THE CHICKEN FOR ROASTING
Preheat oven to 350F. You may need to remove racks from the oven so that the chicken will fit. Do this before they get hot.
- Clean and Dry
Remove giblets from chicken.
Rinse chicken and pat dry.
Sprinkle seasonings all over chicken and some inside.
- Adding beer
Pour half of beer into the bottom of a casserole dish.
Place beer can into the center of the casserole dish with the remaining beer inside.
Place chicken on top of beer can and push down so that the beer can goes at least half way into the cavity of the chicken.
Chicken should be standing upright.
Place casserole dish and chicken into preheat oven.
- Time to roast it
Roast for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
A 4 pound – 4.5 pound chicken should be done after 1.5 hours. Chicken needs to reach an internal temperature of 165° Fahrenheit to be done cooking.
Remove chicken from oven once cooked and let rest 5 minutes.
SIDES TO SERVE WITH BEER CAN CHICKEN:
Frequently Asked Questions
If you don’t like beer, you can use soda or chicken broth for this recipe.
We need the can for the chicken to sit on and I’m not trying to make a glass bottle burst inside of a chicken in the oven.
I would just empty out a soda can and fill it with chicken broth.
A light beer that isn’t too hoppy is best for this recipe.

Can I put baby potatoes in the pan with the beer can chicken?
You sure can!
Why is this the only comment I can read. Recipe indicate 4.5 stars/comments. Where are they?
Hi Kelly! People can rate the recipe (click the stars to rate it) without leaving a comment. So that just means that 70 or more people have clicked the stars to rate it but they don’t have to leave a comment to do so 🙂
does beer add any extra flavor to the chicken?
Not a ton. I don’t love beer but this chicken is pretty good. haha You can also use a can of soda!
Your recipe calls for flour but doesn’t say what to do with it.
No Flour needed. I’ve been doing beer can chicken for a long time and it’s excellent meal that’s easy on the pocket. Never has disappointed and I’ve done it several ways. I always have white or yellow rice on the side with ours.
My go too:
Pat Dry & lightly cover with olive as a binder. Season heavily on a tray laying flat, do both sides – cover everything! You cannot over season this if you’re using the right seasoning. Then grab a sturdy bake safe pan of any sort (5lb that you handle while hot comfortably) . Drink 1/5 of the beer and set it the center of the cooking tray. Grab the chicken, trying not lose any seasoning while handling when possible but some are a tight fit, & place it on the beer can as snug fit as possible to
Make it stand stable. Usually have to get the legs spread out right to stand it up good. Once stood up how you prefer – continue to season the top and places you might have lost season do to handling. Coat that bad boy! I use at least half a tube of seasoning per chicken. Set to the oven to 400 to preheat. Once ready place chicken in oven and immediately turn down to 350-325. Cook 20 minutes per pound at this temp range. Example: 4lb hen would be 1hr 20min minimum. Done Internal temp is 165 (make sure not to test touching a bone but meat only). Remove from oven & let sit on the can for 10 more minutes while the juices redistribute to doneness. Take two forks and hold chicken up – have a friend take an oven mit and pull the boiling beer can out while you are leveraging the chicken with the two forks. Throw the beer in the sink or pour out. ENJOY!
Seasoning – Weber Beer Can Chicken
Beer – (any normal sized can / any beer) flavored beers will leave hints on flavor example blueberry beer.
4lb whole chicken
What do I do with the giblets
You could make a gravy or stock with them or toss them.
I’ve made this several times before using beer and it was fantastic. Had a craving for it this week, so I bought my chicken…but forgot beer. Trying with Citrus Yuzo Smask White Claw! We shall see!!
Do you think ginger ale would give it flavor??
It might not give it a ginger-ale flavor but it will steam it just like a beer would
Sorry, I thought it said 4 tablespoons of flour instead of seasoning. My mistake.
I am making this on Saturday and will definitely be letting you know if the family likes it
Delicious, juicy, chicken! I added broth to a can, instead of using beer, and I basted it with butter after it had baked for 45 minutes.
I made this last night and it was so delicious!
