We’re planning and traveling up north for A Hypothetical Lobster Themed Week Trip to Rockland, Maine! Picking out places to stay, Lobster filled menu ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus some fun Lobster adventures!
Maine in on my bucket list and a lobster themed trip to Maine is at the top of that list!
I love lobster and while we don’t cook it a lot (because the price is OUTRAGIOUOS where we live right now), it’s still on the top of my list of delicious treats!
Just like with my Hypothetical Spooky Weekend Trip to Wilmington, NC post, I thought I’d plan us a lobster filled trip to Maine!
Summer is the best time for lobster so we’re planning this hypothetical trip for summer!
We will section this off into a few categories:

What I would do in Rockland, Maine for a Lobster Themed Week
Lets see what fun we can have in Rockland, Maine!
#1. The Maine Lobster Festival
Address: At Harbor Park – 1 Pleasant St, Rockland, ME 04841
Site: https://mainelobsterfestival.com/
I would try to plan this hypothetical trip in August so that I could go to the Main Lobster Festival! The Rockland annual seafood festival takes place during the first weekend of August, from Wednesday through Sunday. (August 3-7th 2022)
They have food, entertainments, art & crafts, parades, children events and more!
There is a “Maine Lobster Festival Seafood Cooking Contest” where contestants can enter to win a judged recipe contest and a The Marine Experience Tent where there is hands on activities with small marine life and lessons on how lobster traps work.
For kids events they have:
- A Children’s Parade for kids to dress up for
- Cod Fish Carry Race
- A kids only Lobster Eating Contest
- A Little Lobster Diaper Derby for crawling babies
There are also bands that play throughout the festival!
Of course there is a “Eating Tent” at this festival and its all about lobster!!
You can find things like:
- Lobsters Dinners
- Lobster Mac & Cheese
- Lobster Bisque
- Lobster Rolls
- Lobster Caesar Wraps
- Lobster Caesar Salad
You can find the entire menu here
It also looks like they have food trucks set up as well!
#2. Jess’s Market
Address: 118 Main Street Rockland ME 04841
Site: https://jessmarket.com/
This Seafood and Lobster market seems to have a huge selection of fresh seafood, local lobsters from Penobscot Bay and the surrounding islands.
They have live lobsters and cooked lobster meat for sale. I’ve always wanted to cook fresh lobster and if we were in Maine, I would 100% buy some live ones from Jess’s market to cook. They can package them to survive up to 24 hours of travel, so this would probably be “on the way home” purchase if I was staying somewhere without a kitchen.
#3. Camden Harbor Cruises – Lobster Tour
Address: 15 Public Landing, Camden, ME 04843
Site: https://www.camdenharborcruises.com/
This tour and charter company is about 15 minutes from Rockland in Camden but it’s one of the closest Lobster boat tours that I could find.
They offer lobster themed tours like:
- Eco-Tour (wildlife cruise & lobstering demonstration)
- Lobstering & Lighthouse Cruise
- Morning Lobster Haul
I think it would be super interesting to see how lobster traps are baited and hauled up. Plus they give a bit of history and information on the lobsters on the tours.
#5. Archipelago (Shopping)
Address: 386 Main Street Rockland, Maine 04841
Site: https://thearchipelago.net/
This awesome shop on Main Street looks like something I’d really love.
This shop is full of awesome art and homemade items that are made in Maine, like these Lobster items:
- Lobster Cookbooks
- Lobster Claw Baby Rattles
- Lobster Claw Bottle Stoppers
- 75 Recipe Lobster Cookbook
- Fine Art Lobster Sign
- Square Lobster Plate
- Round Lobster Plate
- Lobster Cards
#6. Puffin’s Nest (Shopping)
Address: 464 Main St., Rockland, ME 04841
A cute little nautical looking shop with Maine theme items
Look at these cute Lobster themed items:
#7. Birch Point Beach State Park
Location Lat 44.039583 / Lon -69.097573 Birch Point Beach Road, off Route 73 south of Owl’s Head. – About 15 minutes south of Rockland.
Ok this isn’t Lobster related (unless you happen to see one haha) but we can’t visit Maine without visiting a beach! It is a small park beach and cost about $4 per person to visit but it looks like a great place for a picnic!
#8. Main Street Markets
435 Main St, Rockland, ME 04841
Maine themed products, snack, drinks and food. You can visit Main Street Markets Online here on on Instagram here.
They have canned wine from Blue Lobster Urban Winery — so we’re kind of still on the Lobster theme. haha.
#9. Rockland Ferry Service to Vinalhaven Island
(I would make this a day trip – we’re going to a Lobster Roll!)
Sometimes when I’m planning a real trip or even one of these hypothetical trips, I like to use Google Maps and just “explore” the area.
That is how I stumbled onto the Rockland Ferry! I was just “strolling” down Main Street in Rockland on Google Maps and noticed it. I did a little internet research and found out that there is a ferry that goes from Rockland out to Vinalhaven Island. I’ve never been to Vinalhaven Island but it looks beautiful and quite.
I love ferry rides anyways (we normally take the one down at Fort Fisher, NC into Southport) so the ferry ride alone would be something I’d love. Then as I was taking a look around Vinalhaven Island, it looks like a wonderfully peaceful place to spend the day.
Price varies depending on season and as of Summer 2022 were $17.50 per adult but from what I understand that is a round trip/
The ferry ride from Rockland, Maine to Vinalhaven Island is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. If we were to go, I would probably rent us all bikes for the island.
What to do on Vinalhaven Island?
#1. Great Eats – Food Truck
West Main St, Vinalhaven, ME, United States, Maine.
This food truck looks like it is about a 5 minute walk once you get off the ferry. On The Great Eats Facebook page it looks like they only take cash and are open Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Menu looks like:
- Burgers
- Cheeseburgers
- Lobster Burgers
- Hot Dogs
- Lobster Rolls
- Crab Roll, Crab Melt
- Lobster BLT
- Grilled Cheese
- Grilled Chicken Sandwich
- Chicken Tenders
- Popcorn Chicken
- Fries
- Onion Rings
Of course we’ve here for a Lobster themed week so the Lobster Roll, Lobster Burger and the Lobster BLT on on our list!
#2. Vinalhaven Candy Co
35 W Main St, Vinalhaven, ME
A cute little Ice Cream and Candy Shop that my kiddo would love!
#3. Creelman Farm Store
50 E Main St, Vinalhaven, ME 04863
From looking at their photos online it looks like this little store is a Farm stand indoors, with vegetables from their farm, cheese, and kitchen items!
#4. Marston House Vinalhaven – Antique Store
18 Main St, Vinalhaven, ME 04863
French and English Country style antiques! You can see their Instagram page here.
