well and attempt…………and when I say attempt…. i mean a big attempt.
I have a friend whose baby shower is about a month away. She is doing the babies room in blue, yellow, white, chocolate for the colors. The “Theme” I’m gathering from the photos is a butterfly theme. So for one of the goodies for her shower I am going to attempt to make chocolate butterflies for the cupcakes and the cake truffles……………………………..well……….. last night was my first try at these little bugs.
I’m sure you’ve seen these before in the Hello Cupcake Book!! (Theirs looked MUCH better!!)
I NEED MORE PRACTICE………….. 24 butterfly attempts later this is what I finished the night with
………………………………………….
Well I have a whole month to master this little boogers! But In case you want to try your hand at chocolate butterflies, this is how you do it!
Wax paper
Plastic baggies or Decorating bags
Toothpicks
Wax paper
White nonpareils (the white sprinkle looking things)
Candy Melts In Milk Chocolate
Colored candy melts for the wings
Butterfly Wing Pattern (I got mine from Google)
Cut out your butterfly wing template into squares (two wings per square).
Place on a baking sheet. Cut out squares of wax paper large enough to fit over the butterfly wing templates that you printed.
Melt 1/2 cup of chocolate candy melts in a plastic bag. Also melt 1/2 cup of colored candy melts in another plastic bag. Unseal the bags and microwave in 15 second intervals. Make sure to massage the candy melts in between the trips to the microwave to help the candy “mush” together.
Make sure your candy is completely melted and then seal the bag. (Make sure to push out the excess air in the bag before you seal it.Push the chocolate down to one corner of the bag and snip off a very small corner. (VERY SMALL)
Lay your wax paper over top of your wing template and trace the outline of the butterfly wing with the chocolate candy. Next take your colors candy and fill the inside of the outline.
Use a toothpick spread out the colored candy melts and to swirl the edges and the inside chocolate together slightly. (see photos of completed butterflies). While the chocolate is still wet sprinkle the top and bottom of each wing with a few white nonpareils.
Now let the chocolate wings rest and harden. (I placed mine into the fridge to harden faster).
Now if you are just making the butterflies for decorations or just as candy like I did, this is how to make the wings sit up:
Take a baking sheet and line it with waxed paper. Take 4 sets of straws (each set includes 2 straws). Lay each set onto the baking sheet like this:
The straws will support your wings.
Once you have your wings sat on the straws, take your candy melts and pipe a body onto your butterfly. . Pipe Antennas and your done :). Let the butterflies cool and harden! 🙂
