I don’t remember eating Hostess cupcakes when I was growing up. I remember loving the Little Debbie’s Christmas Tree Brownies and the Hostess Donettes mini donuts but I can’t seem to recall my parents buying Hostess Cupcakes or picking them out from the bakery shop above the family office. However, my husband says he remembers having Hostess Cupcakes a lot growing up which is why I used him as my test subject when I was making these Copycat Hostess Cupcakes!
I love making copycat recipes and while I don’t make them often, they always bring me a lot of joy when I do. So when someone planted the ideas of homemade Hostess Cupcakes with the swirls on top I knew that I needed to give them a try.
This is how I make Easy Homemade Copy Cat Hostess Cupcakes…
What you’ll need for Homemade Hostess Cupcakes: (amounts below in recipe)
- white sugar
- all-purpose flour
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- baking soda
- salt
- eggs
- milk
- vegetable oil
- vanilla extract
- boiling water
That’s what you’ll need for my favorite homemade chocolate cupcake recipe that you’ll find at the bottom of this post.
If you want to make the marshmallow filling and the fun classic Hostess cupcake swirl on top of these cupcakes you will also need:
- unsalted butter, room temperature
- marshmallow fluff
- vanilla extract
- powdered Sugar
- store-bought chocolate frosting
- Cookie Icing or Royal Icing
Decorating CopyCat Hostess Cupcakes:
Once the cupcakes and filling has been made, it’s time to decorate these cupcakes!
Using a small knife, carefully cut a small plug from the center of the cupcake.
Fill with marshmallow filling and top with the cake that was cut off.
Spoon store bought frosting into a bowl or microwave in container.
Heat for 30 seconds – 1 minute until smooth.
Dip cupcake upside down into frosting.
Set cupcake upright and let cool.
Once tacky, use store-bought royal icing / cookie icing to draw signature Hostess cupcake swirls.
You can use homemade frosting or homemade royal icing in place of store bought. I just really love the way the store bought frosting melts and glazes.

I love using canned chocolate frosting for recipes like this because I like the smooth glossy finish that I get from it. I also use it when I make Banana Split Eclair Desserts.
However, you could also use homemade chocolate ganache like I did with these Chocolate Banana Pudding Parfaits.
