For as long as I can remember there have always been two stars on the Thanksgiving table. Those stars were made by grandmother and they were Broccoli Casserole and Green Bean Casserole. No mater what else graced our table, those two casseroles were first on everyone’s list. We would literally grab small helpings of everything else as we made our way around the table so that we could pile our plates high with casserole.

Green Beans for Casserole
This casserole is great with fresh, canned or frozen green beans. I personally like canned green beans in this casserole dish but fresh and frozen will work as well.
If you’re going to use fresh green beans for Green Bean Casserole, make sure to snap the ends and cook them for a bit before adding them into the recipe. You can either cook them quickly in boiling water for about 6 minutes for crisper green beans or you can use my Southern Stove Top Green Bean recipe to cook them before adding them to the casserole.
Canned green beans just need to be drained before adding them to this recipe and frozen green beans will need to be thawed. Now depending on which frozen green beans you buy, you may be able to steam them in the bag they come in or give them a quick toss into boiling water like the fresh green beans.
How long to cook green bean casserole:
I normally cook green bean casserole for 30 minutes. You’re mostly just heating everything together since all of these ingredients are safe to eat “as is”.

Traditional Green Bean Casserole FAQs
1. Can I use this green bean casserole recipe in half? You sure can! Just halve all of the ingredients and cook it in a 2 quart casserole dish.
2. Can I make green bean casserole ahead of time? Yes! This can be made the day before. Put the entire casserole together EXCEPT for the french onions that are going on top. Place it in the fridge, covered with foil or plastic wrap. When you’re ready to bake it, remove plastic wrap or foil, let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes and then bake as directed in the recipe. If you put the topping french onions on the casserole in advance they’re going to end up soggy.
3. Do I have to use fresh green beans to make green bean casserole? Nope. I actually prefer using canned green beans when I make this casserole. Fresh, Canned or Frozen Green Beans can be used for this recipe. If you’re using fresh, cook them before adding them, if you’re using canned green beans make sure to drain them and if you’re using frozen green beans make sure to thaw them first.
4. Green bean Casserole without the canned soup would be great, can I make it with homemade cream of mushroom? Of course! I don’t have my recipe typed up yet for homemade mushroom soup but my friend Jenn at Peas and Crayons has a wonderful homemade mushroom soup recipe that’s perfect for this casserole!
5. I don’t like mushroom soup! Can I use something else in this green bean casserole recipe? You’ll need some kind of creamy soup for this casserole but if you don’t like cream of mushroom you could use cream or chicken or cream of potato soup.
6. Can you double green bean casserole recipe? YES! You’ll need a larger casserole dish but you can absolutely double this recipe.
7. Is a String Bean Casserole Recipe the same things as a green bean casserole recipe? Yes, it is! String Beans and Greens beans are the same thing.
