Inside Out Peppermint Patty Cake

Last Saturday (August 16th) BigBear turned 30!! For the past few years he’s been dreading this birthday like it was the plague! I personally love having birthdays haha but he just could not get excited about the big 3-0!

Well, I just knew that we had to have a little celebration for this milestone birthday to show him that it wasn’t all that bad and after seeing this Vintage Dude 30th Birthday theme on PartyPail.com I KNEW that this was what we needed for the party!

I think I loved it so much because it reminded me of a Jack Daniels bottle and we’ve had quite a few hilarious stories come up in our life while we were “hanging out” with Jack 😉 I just knew that this theme would just make him smile.

BigBearsWife and BigBear at His Party!

I searched through and found the Vintage Dude decorations, plates, napkins and tablecloth!

I even found this “Vintage Dude” Flask to match the party!!

The Vintage Dude party supplies with the “30” on them were my favorite!

I set up the desserts and drinks inside and just lined the food up in the kitchen. We kept it pretty simple and served Thomas’ favorites! We had hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, Texas cheese chili dip and of course cake!

I set up the patio for our eating space! This Vintage Dude tablecloth covered two tables and I covered the other two with plain black tablecloths.

Now BigBear ALWAYS asks for some type of peanut butter chocolate dessert for his birthday but this year he totally switched it up on me! He wanted a Peppermint Patty Cake!  I searched for the perfect chocolate cake recipe and made up a peppermint frosting for the cake but it needed something else…something to tie it into the Vintage Dude party theme!

Oh, that’s perfect! The top of the cake can match the decorations! 🙂

I used the Icing Transfer method to make the Vintage Dude Design on the cake! I’ve done it quite a few times for holiday cakes, Minnie Mouse cakes and One Direction cakes that I’ve made for the girls!

I’ll do a quick explanation below but I have a ton of photos of the Minnie Mouse cake on the blog too if you want more photo step by step directions on how to make an icing transfer for cakes!

So you’ll want to take your design and flip it so that it’s a mirror image! I made a photo copy of one of the napkins, flipped it to a mirror image using PicMonkey.com and turned it into a black and white photo.

Next you’ll print that out (I normally put my image into something like Microsoft Word and make a bunch of different sizes and print them out). Next cut out the image you want to use on your cake and tape it to a baking sheet. REMEMBER to use the mirror image! Yes it is backwards but once you flip it over onto the cake it will be correct!

Cover the image with wax paper. Tape the wax paper to the baking sheet.

Next, use icing to trace the design! I have used homemade butter creme icing but I do LOVE these little icing tubes from Hobby lobby. I don’t have to color icing and I don’t have to put it in bag etc, etc. I just screw a tip onto the tube of icing and get to work! Now sometimes if it is REALLY hot, I have found that the black will bleed a bit, so just test it out and see how it works for you! I’ve only had it bleed on 2 cakes and those were in the middle of the summer parties haha.

Once you’ve traced the whole image, place the baking sheet into the freezer and let it freeze for a few hours. Remove the baking sheet and cover the design (carefully!) with a layer of white icing (or whatever color your cake will be!) This will make it easier to apply to your cake!

Freeze that for 24 – 48 hours, when it’s time to decorate the cake, icing the cake and before serving, remove the transfer from the freezer. Work quickly but carefully and remove the wax paper from the baking sheet. (I use an old baking sheet for transfers and I use a small knife to cut the design out (well, like a circle or square around the design). Then lift the design up, turn it over onto the cake and peel back the wax paper to reveal the design!

Now the design may be a bit higher than the cake surface so I just take extra icing and fill in around the design and smooth it out with a spatula.

And that’s how I got the cake to match the party theme!

I also went around the cake and piped little icing stars and placed a mini Peppermint Patty on top of each one to finish the cake and pull in the peppermint patty flavor!

I got more compliments on this cake that I have on anything I’ve ever baked in my life!

I hope you’ll give the icing transfer a try! It’s my favorite way to decorate homemade cakes! I don’t have the time or patience for much else when it comes to cakes haha 😉

Adapted from Life, Love and Sugar’s Best Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

For Vintage Dude Transfer:
Black Icing, homemade or store bought
Gold or Yellow Icing,  homemade or store bought
Wax paper
Mirror Image of Vintage Dude Design

For Cake:

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa Powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoons vanilla

1 cup boiling water

For Peppermint Icing

1 cup butter, room temperature
8 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons peppermint
8 oz Cream Cheese, room temperature

4 tablespoons milk

Mini Peppermint Patties

Directions

For Vintage Dude Transfer:

Print the mirror image of the design for the transfer.

Next cut out the image you want to use on your cake and tape it to a baking sheet.

REMEMBER to use the mirror image! Yes it is backwards but once you flip it over onto the cake it will be correct!

Cover the image with wax paper. Tape the wax paper to the baking sheet.

Trace the entire image and place the baking sheet into the freezer. Freeze for a few hours.

Remove the baking sheet and cover the design (carefully!) with a layer of white icing (or whatever color your cake will be!)

Freeze for 24 – 48 hours.

For Cake:

Preheat oven to 300F.

Grease the bottom and sides of a 8 or 9 inch cake pan. (I just did one thick layer, if you want more layers you can split the cake into more pans and decrease the cooking time)

In a large bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), combine all of the dry ingredients and whisk together.

Mix in the eggs.

Mix in the milk and oil. Mix well.

Add in the vanilla boiling water. mix well. (batter will be very thin)

Pour batter into cakes pan and bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes (if you split it into 2 or 3 cake pans, bake for about 40 minutes and then test the cake to see if it’s done)

Remove cakes from oven and allow to cool.

For Peppermint Icing:

In the bowl of a mixer, beat together the butter and cream cheese

Slowly add in half of the powdered sugar and mix well. Add in 2 tablespoons of milk and the peppermint. Mix well. Add in the rest of the powdered sugar and mix well.
If the icing is too thick add in the other 2 tablespoons of milk. Mix well.

Once cake is cooled, place the cake onto the serving plate and apply a thin layer of icing to the cake. This is the crumb coat. Place the ice into the fridge for 1 hour.

Remove cake and spread the rest of the icing over the cake.  Place the cake back into the fridge until ready to add the transfer.

To Add Vintage Dude Transfer:

Remove the transfer from the freezer. Work quickly but carefully and remove the wax paper from the baking sheet.

(I use an old baking sheet for transfers and I use a small knife to cut the design out (well, like a circle or square around the design).

Lift the design up, turn it over onto the cake and peel back the wax paper to reveal the design!

Now the design may be a bit higher than the cake surface so I just take extra icing and fill in around the design and smooth it out with a spatula.

For an extra design, pipe small swirls around the cake and top them with the mini peppermint patties!
