Mardi Gras Deco Mesh Wreath | BigBearsWife.com

Mardi Gras is almost here! If you’re in New Orleans you’ve probably been celebrating for a few weeks now, well maybe a week or so. I’ve been to New Orleans twice. Once for Mardi Gras and once the week before Mardi Gras and both times I experienced one hell of a celebration. 🙂

I’m itching to go back! But until I can make it back down to good old NOLA, I’ll just continue to listen to my Jazz music and dream of walking the streets of the french quarter. It’s one of those cities that I cold totally see myself living it. (Well only if I could live in one of those apartments/houses in the French Quarter or an old Southern Mansion somewhere down there). The history of the city fascinates me and the culture is just amazing. Hey New Orleans is where I got my famous Celtic Knot that I’ve worn pretty much everyday for the past 10 years 🙂

So when I asked on my Facebook page what type of Deco Mesh wreath I should make, my sister in law piped up and said “Um hello…. My sister happens to LOVE Mardi Gras…. I’m surprised she hasn’t already thought of it”.

*Facepalm* What didn’t I think of that! So Thank you Rachael, I now have a pretty Mardi Gras wreath hanging on my front door to remind me of the wonderful city that makes me feel alive!

I went to hobby lobby in search of some Mardi Gras stuff, I thought for sure that they would have some type of section dedicated to Mardi Gras, even if it was a small one. But sadly there wasn’t one. So I had to just kind of pick through the store and look for Purple, Green and Gold items to turn my wreath into something that represented Mardi Gras!

You knew that Mardi Gras colors are Purple, Green and Gold right? Of course you did! But in case you need a refresher here you go – Purple = Justice, Green = Faith, Gold = Power.

So for the base of the wreath I used Green deco mesh!

I also have a green strand of Mardi Gras beads on there!

I used a smaller roll of purple deco mesh for the purple accents of the wreath.

Now for the gold, I couldn’t find any gold deco mesh or gold ribbon that wasn’t ugly as dirt haha, so I went with a sheer yellow ribbon for the “gold/yellow” part of the wreath!

I was thinking of using large rolls of green, purple and gold deco mesh but stopped for 2 reasons! One, that would have been a pretty thick wreath and the second reason was because that would have been an expensive wreath! So I used one large roll of green deco mesh, a small roll of purple deco mesh and a roll of yellow ribbon!

So after making the deco mesh wreath I added my “embellishments”.

I found these glitter picks in the floral sections of Hobby Lobby. I got one purple one and one gold pick!

For the green pick, I couldn’t find a green glitter pick so I went with this green start burst one. It was over near the floral section as well!

As I was searching the store for Purple, Green and Gold accents for the wreath I found a “photo booth” section with these little masks!

They were kind of plan looking so I got some feathers from the craft section and hot clued them to the sides of the masks! Perfect Mardi Gras masks for about $2 each!

Speaking of feathers, I used them in groups of green, purple and yellow to fill in holes in the wreath!

They filled in the gaps perfectly and added more of the “Mardi Gras” flare!

So, do you celebrate Mardi Gras? Have you been to New Orleans?

If you’re looking for a step by step tutorial on how to make a deco mesh wreath like this, I have step by step directions with photos here! (It’s my Halloween Deco Mesh Wreath, but the steps are the same!)
