How To Make Mississippi Mud Pie:
- 1st Layer – OREO Cookie Crust
Our first step is going to be getting the cookie crust made. Take the crushed OREO cookies and melted butter and mix them together in a bowl until they have the consistency of wet sand.
-
Press crumbs firmly into deep dish 9 inch pie dish or a springform pan. Make sure to press crumbs firmly on bottom of dish. I like to use a springform pan for pies with layers because it’s easier to see the layers and to remove the slices (in my opinion). Set this aside.
- 2nd Layer – Homemade Brownie
Don’t panic! A homemade brownie is super easy to make.
First take the diced butter, sugar and cocoa powder and pop them into a microwave safe bowl. -
Stick the bowl into microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Stir.
Stir the mixture and then microwave for another 30 seconds. Let the chocolate mixture cool slightly and then add the vanilla,. salt and eggs. Mix well to combine. -
Next, Mix stir the flour into the batter until completely incorporated. Stir for 1 minute, about 50-60 stirs.
-
Spread the brownie batter over the OREO crust in a single layer.
-
Pop that into a preheated oven and let it bake for about 30 minutes.
-
Once that is baked and cooled, let’s move onto the next layer.
- 3rd Layer – Hot Fudge
This is the easiest layer of them all. We’re just spreading a layer of hot fudge sauce (like the kind you buy for ice cream) over the brownie layer.
- 4th Layer – Chocolate Pudding
We’re keeping this layer simple and making it with instant chocolate pudding! We need this layer to be thick though so we’re doing 2 small boxes of chocolate pudding mix and ONLY 1 cup of milk!
Whisk that together until thick and spread it over the hot fudge. -
Now take a piece of plastic wrap and press that down on top of the pie and pop it into the fridge overnight or at least 8 hours to chill and firm up.
- 5th and Final Layer – Crème Chantilly
When you’re ready to serve, it’s time to top it with the homemade whipped cream.
AKA “Crème Chantilly” (you can find the recipe for Crème Chantilly here) -
I also like to top this pie with chocolate shavings or chocolate curls.
Why Is This Pie Called “Mississippi Mud Pie“?
It’s a weird reason to name it this because of it haha but it’s called Mississippi Mud Pie because the colors and layers and the top of the brownie layer looks like the banks of the great Mississippi River.
I guess we’re just pretending like we’re kids again and making mud pies….except this one is edible and amazing!
How Do I Make Chocolate Shavings Or Chocolate Curls?
If you want to make the small chocolate shavings, you’ll need a super cold chocolate bar and a vegetable peeler. Just run the vegetable peeler over the side of the chocolate bar for the shavings.
For chocolate curls, you’ll need the same items…a chocolate bar and vegetable peeler but you’ll want the chocolate to be at room temperature. Just slowly run the vegetable peeler over the side of the chocolate bar and chocolate curls will form.
