I was terrified when my future sister in law asked me to make a Semi Naked cake for her bridal shower. Thankfully it wasn’t as hard and I thought it was going to be! Today is all about the semi naked and and how easy it is to make!

Alright y’all…I know that Sept. 1st was suppose to be the start of all things Halloween around here, I know. Please forgive me.

The next week is going to be WEDDING 24/7 around here and well, it’s the perfect time to share some of those wedding things I’ve been working on this year.

Since you know, the wedding is almost here. Oh, not MY wedding, My brother’s wedding. 😉

That’s right, my little brother is getting married in like 8 days. Holy Moly, y’all. My little brother is getting married!

My little brother, Adam, asked his sweetheart to marry him in a surprise photo session last year. At the time, September 2016 seemed like it would take forever to get here.

Now, it’s right on top of us.

That’s ok, we’re semi ready for it. haha

All the wedding things have been happening around here. The wedding invitations were made by yours truly, bachelor/bachelorette trips were planned/taken and wedding decisions made.

I’ve been helping my future sister in law, Meghan, work on wedding stuff all year and in August it was time for their wedding shower.  My mom and I worked on the shower with a little help from some of Meghan’s bridesmaids, oh and it turned out perfectly.

We pretty much had control over the wedding shower planning but Meghan did request one thing. She asked for a semi naked orange cake for the shower.

I had never made a semi naked cake before but if Meghan wanted one for her shower, I was going to figure it out.

So the semi naked cake happened…..after tons of youtube tutorials that is. haha

I went with my favorite doctored cake recipe for the base which turned out perfectly.

Well it turned out perfectly for a homemade non professional cake. haha ( I don’t know why people keep asking me to make cakes lol)

She loved it and it was a huge hit at the party! Whoo whee, I’m glad because I was ridiculously nervous while I was making it.

While I was icing it, I kept telling my mom that it was the ugliest cake I’d ever seen. hahaha Thankfully, it looked much better after I finished icing it and added the flowers to it.

So today is all about semi naked cakes here on BigBearsWife.com haha.

I’ve got the directions and the easy recipes  that I used for this Orange Semi Naked Sunflower Cake, below!

  • Yield: 30 slices or more depending on how big the slice is cut.

Ingredients

For Cake:

  • 2 box Creamsicle Orange Cake Mix
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 8 egg whites
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups sour cream (16oz container)
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla

For Icing:

  • 2 cups butter, softened
  • 16 ounces Cream cheese, softened
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla
  • 16 cups powdered sugar + more if desired for thicker icing

You'll also need flowers for decorating

    Instructions

    For Cake:

    • Pre-heat oven to 350F.
    • In a large bowl, mix together cake mix, flour, sugar, and salt. In the bowl of a mixer, mix together the egg whites and vanilla, water and vanilla.
    • Mix on low for about 10 seconds.
    • Slowly add the dry mix a little at a time.
    • Mixing on low until everything is combined. Add sour cream and mix well.
    • Pour into cake pans and bake for 30 minutes or until done. --- for this cake I used two- 8inch cake pans and two - 4inch cake pans
    • Remove from oven and cool.

    For Icing:

    • Cream butter in the bowl of a mixer.
    • Add cream cheese and mix well.
    • Slowly add powdered sugar while mixing.
    • Add vanilla. Whip.
    • Add more powdered sugar for thicker icing or add more milk for thinner icing.
    • Reserve about 1 cup - 1 1/2 cups of frosting for icing border and the flowers if desired.

    To assemble:

    • Once cooled, level the cakes if needed but carefully cutting off the rounded tops to make a flat surface. Cut each layer in half making multiple layers. Stack layers onto a cake board, adding a thick layer of frosting in between each layer.
    • Press the cakes down so that some of the frosting comes out on the sides.
    • Using a bench scraper or a long icing spatula, drag the icing around the cake. Place the bench scraper edge flat against the cake and rotate the cake to smooth it out, pull the scraper around the cake, removing excess icing.
    • Add a little bit of icing at the time, pulling it around the cake as if you were putting on a crumb coat. Don't cover the entire cake, as you want some of the cake to peak through the icing.
    • Work in sections until the entire cake is complete.
    • Decorate with fake or real flowers.
    • Print
