When my husband was in the military and we lived at Camp Lejeune, I always had our house decorated with patriotic items on holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veteran’s Day. Being married to my husband and watching him go through deployments and normal everyday events of the military really put the patriotic spirit into me.
When he got out of the military, we were moving a lot and I was working all the time so decorating for things just kind of got put on the back burner. I missed having my American Flag outside and I missed the red, white and blue that I had once proudly displayed in honor of my husband and our country.
So when we moved into our new house, I knew that I wanted a big American flag to fly outside. It took me almost a year to actually get one but I finally did and then thought “well I’ve got my flag but something’s missing”.
Sine I’ve been making these Deco Mesh wreaths I knew that I had to make a patriotic one! It was just what the front door needed!! I made this for Memorial Day but it’s perfect for any Patriotic “holiday” OR leave it up all the time!
So let’s make one for you!!
As always, I am linking to the my “Work Wreath” (Click HERE) tutorial and below you’ll see how I made my 4th of July/Memorial Day Deco Mesh Wreath!!
4th of July/Memorial Day Deco Mesh Wreath Tutorial
Here is what I used:
1 Work Wreath Form (22 or 24 inch), store bought or homemade (click here to learn how to make one)
20 – Royal Blue Pipe Cleaners (for the wreath from ^)
1 ( 21″ x 10 yards) Red White and Blue Metallic Deco Mesh Roll – From Hobby Lobby
1 (10″) Red Deco Mesh Roll – From Hobby Lobby
1 (5 1/2″) Royal Blue Deco Mesh Ribbon Roll – From Hobby Lobby
2 small USA ribbons – From Hobby Lobby
1 metal USA flag – From Hobby Lobby
1 large Glitter USA ribbon – From The Dollar Store
1 USA sign – From The Dollar Store
(Green tube ribbon – optional, I thought I would use it but didn’t – it comes from the floral section of Hobby Lobby)
**You’ll also need a glue gun**
First, you’ll need to make a Work Wreath Form (unless you’ve bought one pre-made). I have a tutorial on making that here.
This is what it will look like when you’re finished.
To start making the wreath, unwrap the large tube of deco mesh and gather the end . Take the end of the deco mesh and place it into the center of one of the inside ring pipe cleaners.
Twist the pipe cleaner to hold the deco mesh into place.
Move down the Deco Mesh just a bit and bunch it together again.
Secure onto the next section of the wire wreath with a pipe cleaner twist. (Work along the inner circle first)
Go all way around the middle of the metal wreath form.
Once you’ve completed the entire inner circle of pipe cleaners and get back to the starting point, start with the pipe cleaners directly above the “starting point” pipe cleaner and work around the outer ring.
Fluff the deco mesh as you go.
Once you’ve finished the base it’s time to add the red. Unwrap your red Deco Mesh and bunch together the end.
Find your starting point on the inner circle of pipe cleaners and tie the end of the red deco mesh into that pipe cleaner.
Go all the way around the inner circle. Then do the same with the red around the outer circle of pipe cleaners.
Do the same thing with your Blue Deco Mesh.
Start at the same starting place and tie the end of the blue deco mesh into the pipe cleaner.
Go all the way around the inner circle. Then do the same with the blue deco mesh around the outer circle of pipe cleaners.
Flip your deco mesh wreath over and fluff the deco mesh.
Now your wreath base is finished, but you’ll still have all of the crazy pipe cleaners sticking out everywhere so we’ll need to clean that up a bit.
Working your way around the wreath, pull the pipe cleaners around and to the back of the wreath.
Wrap them around the wire wreath form.
Work your way around the wreath until all of them look like this:
Doesn’t that look better!
This is what it will look like after you’re done.
Flip the wreath back over and fluff the deco mesh again.
Now it’s time to decorate. Hang your new wreath on a door inside with a wreath hanger or hang it on something else like this blanket/towel rack.
I use pipe cleaners and hot glue to place my items on my wreath. Make sure to anchor them onto the wreath by attaching them through the deco mesh and onto the wire frame. Don’t put anything too heavy on it or it will pull down the deco mesh.
Arrange everything BEFORE gluing them down haha. I normally have to arrange things and step back quite a few times before I’m happy with everything. Once I’m happy with the way it looks, I’ll go around the wreath and hot glue everything into place!
Some items like bows will already have ribbon tied to the back of them, so I just tie those onto the wreath.
Love this glitter ribbon!
Here’s the USA Sign I got from the Dollar Store!
Ribbons from Hobby Lobby!
A little Flag from Hobby Lobby.
And here is is.. all finished!!
Perfect for Memorial Day, 4th of July or just anytime of the year!!
I love it so much!
Hope you’ll make one soon!
