What you need for Black Forest Cupcakes: (amounts in recipe)
- Chocolate Cupcakes (recipe included)
- Vanilla Whipped Cream Frosting (recipe included)
- Cherry Pie Filling
- Chocolate Curls
Filling Black Forest Cupcakes with cherry pie filling:
This is how I decorate and filling my cupcakes.
First, lets filling these cupcakes with a cherry pie filling.
You’ll want to wait until the cupcakes are cool before you filling them. Once the cupcakes are cooled completely, use a small knife or spoon to carve a plug from middle of cupcake.
Don’t toss this plug of cupcake though because you’ll need it again.
Fill each cupcake with 1/2 tablespoon cherry pie filling. This is about 3 cherries from canned pie filling and some of the filling.
Then cover the cherry pie filling with cupcake pieces and press it down so there is a flat surface to pipe frosting on.
I did use canned cherry pie filling for these because we don’t have cherries in our stores right now.
However, if you can find cherries and want to make a homemade cherry pie filling for these cupcakes here are some options:
Dixie Crystals has a homemade cherry pie filling that you can use or you can use the homemade version that I use for my Cherry Pie Cookie Cups .
Homemade Vanilla Whipped Cream Frosting for Black Forest Cupcakes:
I made a delicious homemade vanilla whipped cream frosting for these cupcakes since a lot of black forest cakes are filled and topped with whipped cream frostings.
If you’ve never made whipped cream frosting, it’s very simple to make and much fluffier and lighter than regular buttercream.
I used a large star tip to pipe the whipped cream frosting onto the cupcakes.
Does Whipped Cream Frosting need to be refrigerated?
Yes!
Since Whipped Cream frosting is made with just whipped cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract it does need to be refrigerated and eaten within 2 days.
I did a test on this frosting and it does hold it’s shape very nicely in the fridge and at room temperature but it will melt if it gets too warm. I left a test swirl on the counter for 24 hours just to check on how it was holding it’s shape as well as a test swirl in the fridge for 24 hours.
Neither melted down but the one in the fridge was stiffer and looked better.
If you were making these for a party, keep them in the fridge and either serve them cold or bring them out an hour or two before the party and let them sit at room temperature.
Heat and humidity will kill your whipped cream frosting.
How to make chocolate curls:
You can buy chocolate curls for this recipe or you can grab a chocolate bar and make your own.
To make homemade chocolate curls/chocolate shavings, use a vegetable peeler on the side of a chocolate bar in short sharp motions to shave off tiny chocolate curls.
For smaller shavings or curls pop the chocolate into the freezer first for about 30 minutes before shaving.
