Homemade Cherry Pie Filling inside of perfectly baked lattice pie crust makes for the perfect summer dessert! Top it with a bit of whipped cream and a few fresh cherries for that classic cherry pie look!
This post and recipe was created for #SummerDessertWeek! I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies but as always opinions are 100% mine.
Whenever I think of summer in the south I always picture a sweet little picnic under a shaded tree with a cute little picnic basket, a red and white checkered picnic blanket and a classic sweet cherry pie sitting there ready for dessert.
haha Now do we have a lot of sweet little picnics during the summer here. UM….that’s a negative haha. We have cookouts (I prefer the ones by the pool) and sometimes we just eat outside in the evenings but most of the time it’s just too dang hot to enjoy a sweet little picnic outside.
If you live in the south you know what I mean.
I prefer my little picnics in the spring or fall but I still picture picnics and cherry pies hand in hand when I think of them.
This Classic Sweet Cherry Pie is made with sweet cherries instead of tart pie cherries. It’s a little darker than the cherry pie you probably picture in your head when you think of southern cherry pie, but y’all it’s so good!
Plus it’s so much easier for me to find sweet cherries around here.
I’ve only found tart pie cherries at the farmer’s market ONCE! ONCE!
However, these sweet cherries are pretty much everywhere during the summer.
So you know, today is the second day of #SummerDessertWeek here on the blog. I though this Classic Sweet Cherry Pie would be perfect since Rainier Fruit sent us cherries for #SummerDessertWeek and OXO sent us a cherry pitter and one of their lovely glass pie dishes!
Speaking of the cherry pitter, do you have a cherry pitter? If not, you need one! I had never had one before but when OXO sent me one a few weeks ago I was too excited to use it!
It made pitting the cherries a breeze! I’ll link to a little video here of me pitting these cherries with the OXO cherry pitter over on Instagram.
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to cutting the pits out by hand again.
Now for the top, I made a lattice top for this Classic Sweet Cherry Pie. They are pretty easy to make but if you need a tutorial, there are tons of YouTube videos on how to do them.
Feel free to serve this plain but I love to top this cherry pie with whipped cream and a few fresh sweet cherries.

Girl, you know that I’m all about cherry pie. I don’t often make a straight up sweet cherry pie, but I’m craving one now! I tell ya what, that OXO cherry pitter is a total game changer! I live in the Cherry Capital of the World, so I literally pit thousands of cherries every summer. The OXO pitter makes that job so much easier. I look forward to trying your pie!

This is one of the most perfectly stunning classic pies I’ve seen in awhile. Bravo. I want to eat the entire thing I also love that it was made with sweet cherries. I’m not into tart cherry pies because you have to use so much sugar it ends up being way too sweet!

I’m not in the south but we’ve had temps over 100 for the last three weeks. Bleck! No picnics for us either. A slice of pie would help though, hint, hint!! 😉

I LIVE for cherry season!! Would you, any followers or fellow bloggers share info on freezing fresh cherries? They’re very expensive in stores and I’d love to make my own stock pile while I can still get them.
You did a great job in making this classic dessert! It’s gorgeous!
