I don’t call myself a chocolate addict but I do have a weakness for chocolate ice cream and fudge chocolate frosting. This Homemade Chocolate Fudge Frosting is one of my favorites to use for cakes and cupcakes, with us mostly being use on German chocolate cakes when I make them for my family.
However, this recipe is perfect for cupcakes, cakes and frosted brownies!
What you’ll need to make Homemade Chocolate Fudge Frosting:
- unsalted butter, melted
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- Powdered Sugar
- milk or heavy cream
- vanilla extract (or chocolate)
This is how easy it is to make chocolate frosting at home:
Use an electric mixer to whisk together melted butter and cocoa powder.
Once smooth and shiny, mix in vanilla.
Mix frosting while alternating powdered sugar and milk to the chocolate, ending with milk until desired consistency is reached.
NOTES
This recipe makes about 4 cups of frosting – which will frost about 24 cupcakes depending on how much frosting you add to each cupcake. This recipe is also enough to frost a 2- 3 layer cake. If you want a ton of frosting in between the layers you may want to double the recipe.
This frosting also stiffen ups a bit after being exposed to air, so make sure to go ahead and use it once it’s made or you’ll need to just whip it again for a few minutes with an electric mixer when you’re ready to use it.
I really like to use a large star tip to pipe frosting onto cupcakes but you can also just put it on with a butter knife. Either way, it’ll taste amazing!
