My husband is normally in charge of sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. He makes a lovely Brown Sugar Glazed Sweet Potato dish that I just love. However, with the holidays on the way, I knew that it was time to start adding some more side dish recipes to my recipe binder.
So these mashed sweet potatoes were born and I love them.
I noticed a lot of people were boiling their sweet potatoes when making mashed sweet potatoes but I just don’t love that method.
I like to baked sweet potatoes when I’m working with them because it gives them a sweeter and more caramelized flavor.

How to make Mashed Sweet Potatoes :

Preheat oven to 400F.

Prink sweet potatoes with a fork and wrap each one in foil. I’ve heard that you don’t have to prick potatoes but I’m still convinced that I need to do it. haha.

Lay wrapped potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes.

Carefully flip potatoes and bake for 30 more minutes.

Remove from oven and let potatoes slightly cool. Once cool enough to touch, remove foil and skin from potatoes.

Add sweet potato “meat” to a bowl of a mixer.

Whip sweet potatoes until smooth.

Melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat in a sauce pan.
Once melted, slowly add to sweet potatoes while mixing. -
Add in 1 tablespoon of maple syrup and mix. Taste and add another tablespoon of maple if needed.
I like my sweet potatoes after 1 tablespoon of the maple syrup but I know there are some people that like them a lot sweeter. -
When ready to serve, these mashed sweet potatoes are best served warm. I like to spoon them into their serving dish and top them with butter, a sprinkle of brown sugar and chopped pecans.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can make these without the oven. If you want to make them without the oven, you’ll need to peel the sweet potatoes, cube them and boil them until they are tender (about 30 minutes). Drain and then proceed with the recipe as written. I like to roast them because I feel like roasted sweet potatoes gives them a caramelized taste.
I love brown sugar and chopped pecans but you could also add mini marshmallows.

- 5 large sweet potatoes
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup
- Chopped pecans, optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F.

- Carefully flip potatoes and bake for 30 more minutes.

Do you think it’s possible to bake them the night before then add everything else the next day? I’d like to make them for Thanksgiving but I’m not sure I’ll have the oven free long enough to bake them.

Sure thing! You could probably just make the entire thing the night before and then heat it the day of!
