This Depression Era Mock Pecan Pie is another fun recipe that I’ve pulled from my grandmother’s recipe box. I’ve heard of mock pecan pies being made with crackers, beans and pretzels but we’re making this faux pecan pie with oatmeal!
I love how it looks like a real pecan pie after baking, plus it’s great for anyone with a nut allergy that can’t have a regular pecan pie. It’s also so much cheaper than making a pecan pie! Pecans can get expensive!

- pie shell – You’ll want to use an unbaked pie crust for this recipe. Homemade or store bought will work
- oatmeal – plain Quick 1 – Minute Oatmeal oat, Steel Cut Oats or Old-Fashioned Oats will work for this recipe
- light corn syrup – I use Karo but any brand will be fine
- butter – salted or unsalted butter will be fine here. Just make sure that the butter is super soft or melted
- sugar – white granulated sugar is the kind of sugar you’ll want to use for this recipe
- eggs – Regular sized store bought eggs or regular sized farm fresh eggs will work perfectly for this pie

How to make an Old-Fashioned Mock Pecan Pie – which is also a great Nut Free Pecan Pie
First we’re starting this pie with the crust. Super simple, we’re just using a premade, unbaked pie crust for this recipe. I used a 9 inch regular pie shell for this Oameal Pecan Pie.
The filling for this depression pecan pie is super simple. In a mixing bowl, just combine the oatmeal, light corn syrup, butter, sugar and eggs. Mix it well with a spoon or spatula.
Then just pour the mixture into the unbaked pie crust.
Bake this pie for 60 minutes and let it cool a but before serving. It’s great on it’s own but even better with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.

- Do I need to prebake the crust? Nope! You’re going to want to pour the filling right into the unbaked pie crust.
- Does this taste like pecan pie even without the pecans? It does! Of course you won’t taste pecans directly but it has the same over all pecan pie filling flavor that my regular pecan pies have.

Old-Fashioned Mock Pecan Pie
- 9 inch pie shell - unbaked
- 3/4 cup oatmeal
- 3/4 cup light corn syrup
- 4 tablespoons salted butter, super soft or melted
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs, cracked and whisked
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Mix ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Pour mixture into unbaked pie crust.
- Bake for 1 hour.
- Remove and let cool.
- Serve plain, with ice cream or with whipped cream
