How to make Unicorn Ice Cream at home:
This particular Unicorn Ice Cream is a no churn ice cream recipe, which means you don’t need an ice cream machine to make this frozen treat.
We’re just using an electric mixer and a freezer.
If you’ve never made no churn ice cream, it can be intimidating to think of at first but I can assure you that once you make it for the first time, you’ll be in love with this ice cream making method. I make almost all of my ice cream recipes with this method because it is just so easy and I don’t have to worry about an ice cream machine and I don’t like to add raw eggs to my ice cream recipes.
-
In large bowl (or a stand mixer) whip heavy cream and vanilla together a few minutes until stiff peaks form. Add in the sweetened condensed milk and whisk until combined.
-
Separate mixture into 4 bowls.
-
Tint one bowl of ice cream base mixture with a few drops of the neon pink icing. Mix well. Add more pink and mix if desired.
Do the same thing with the remaining colors and remaining bowls of ice cream base mixture. You should have one bowl of pink ice cream base, one bowl of purple, one bowl of blue and one bowl of neon green.
If you don’t want the colors to be quite so neon, you can just add less food coloring to make the colors more pastel. -
Spoon all color mixtures into a loaf pan, alternating spoonfuls of color.
Once all of the mixture is in the loaf pan, take a knife and run it through the load pan in a figure 8 a few times to swirl the ice cream colors. -
Sprinkle with rainbow sprinkles.
If you don’t want to use rainbow sprinkles you can also use actual unicorn sprinkles like I used in the Unicorn Cake Mix Cookies. -
Freeze for several hours or over night until frozen.
When the ice cream freezes, it will look more pastel on top but the colors will really shine through once you scoop into it.
Note: if you are worried about the amount of food coloring affecting the taste, you can find “no taste” food colorings in some cake stores and online, like these tasteless food colorings that I found on Amazon.
I am not a fan of of the taste of food colorings like red and black because I think they are too bitter but these neon colors that I used didn’t change the taste of the ice cream for me. However, I know that some people are more sensitive to the taste of food coloring that others. Also, if you can’t find all of these colors, don’t worry. You can use any combination of rainbow or neon colors to make this.
I think this would look great with just the pink and blue or maybe just the purple, pink and green. It is so easy to make so it’s great for experimenting with color swirl combinations to make your perfect ice cream.

Unicorn Ice Cream FAQ:
Unicorn Ice Cream is a no churn homemade ice cream that’s has neon colored swirls and rainbow sprinkles.
This unicorn ice cream is vanilla flavored.
It takes about 6-8 hours for no churn ice cream to freeze.
You sure can! I didn’t add any to this but edible glitter would be great for unicorn ice cream.
Nope! I just find it to be easy to freeze in a loaf pan but you can freeze it in any type of metal pan.
I’ve tried this type of ice cream in glass dishes and glass loaf pans and while it will freeze, it doesn’t freeze as nice as the metal pans.

I hope you are feeling better, Angie!
This is just such a fun idea. My little niece and nephews are coming to visit and I know they would absolutely love this! Looks like we have a project! Thanks for the inspiration!
This ice cream is so fun! You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy fun colored ice cream 🙂 I’m happy to hear you are home resting. My husband had major kidney stone surgery last year so I know how horrible it can be!
How fun are the colors and sprinkles in this ice cream?! Here I was thinking you were going to say that the pain meds were making you see unicorns that told you to make this ice cream. I sure hope that you feel better soon. Kidney stones are jerks.
My kids are hovering around my computer begging to make this ice cream! Love all the colors, you did such a great job. Hope you feel much better soon!
How to complete a little girls birthday party! Unicorn Ice Cream!
I have been eyeing this ice cream for the past couple of days. It is SO magical! <3 And I hope you get to feeling better soon! 🙂
I literally can’t get over the color/colors of your unicorn ice cream. I think I’m going to crown you the queen of the no- churn ice cream. You rock, Angie!
This ice cream looks so fun and happy. Totally the kind of thing to cheer someone up when they’re down. I hope you still have some in your freezer… Nothing like ice cream and sprinkles to make everything better.
PS: Sending you lots of get well soon vibes! <3
You poor thing!!Had like 5 million surgeries, including complete removal of my large intestine!?!Am healthy now,and you will be as well.My late Gram taught me to break a piece off a slice of bread, wrap the pill in it.To not be sick.Love, love, the colors in this ice cream, and so simple!!thanks and speedy recovery?
I’ll have to remember that next time. I bet that would help with taking my pain medication! Yikes and sorry to hear about all the surgeries but I’m glad that you’re better now!
Hope you’re feeling ship-shape again Angie. B had a kidney stone too, it’s wicked painful. Hopefully you’re getting lots of rest and taking it easy.
This ice cream is too adorable for words. I love ice cream. And unicorns. So I’m all in on this one.
I’ve been getting rest, thankfully! I’m back to work this week and feeling so much better! We even got my niece this past weekend and I only had a little bit of pain.
YAY! I’m so glad that you liked the ice cream!
This is an adorable ice cream flavor idea- who wouldn’t LOVE Unicorn Ice Cream??? So cute.
Also, I had gallstones (so many that they took out my gallbladder), and I have had kidney stones twice. No surgery… just had to wait for them to pass while you feel like you’re going to DIE. So I know what you’re going through!! Hope you are feeling better now and you don’t get any more!
ooo I’ve heard that gallstones are terrible. I don’t have any of those right now but they’re keeping an eye on it because the x-ray and CT scan showed some issues. Oh and YES! haha Kidney stones are the devil! They’re awful. I still have two in my right kidney but they haven’t dropped so they’re not hurting me…. yet..
This is so fun!!! My kids would love to make this during the summer!!
haha Perfect! Hope they love it!
I sure do hope you start feeling better soon. I’ve never had kidney stones but I hear they’re the worst when it comes to pain. Plus I’ve never heard that carbs are a good thing when it comes to pain meds. I guess it makes sense when I think about it. I hope you can cut those suckers out of your diet soon and get back on your low-carb eating plan.
Your ice cream is SO much fun. The colors you’ve achieved are amazing!
haha well I don’t know if carb carbs are good for pain meds, but when I take them I need something like rice, bread or pasta….something along those lines or I get really sick. It’s like I need the starchy foods to help absorb it haha. Thanks for the color comment haha I thought neon colors would be perfect for this!!!
SO COLORFUL AND PRETTY AND HAPPY!
I love you. I just…wow, I am weeping rainbow sprinkles of happiness just looking at this.
how colorful i is yaamm sounds delicious.
Just wondering how many servings this recipe would make? Sorry if I was there and I missed it. Doing my daughters 7th birthday and we are super excited to try unicorn stuff ( especially ? ? ? )
Thanks so much and hope your recovering well!!!
It makes 1 loaf pan of ice cream. Servings will all depend on how much ice cream you consider a servings. haha 🙂 Mmmm I’m gonna say 10 servings.
Has anyone used a disposable foil pan to make this in? It looks so yummy and my daughter may decide on a unicorn party this year 🙂
I haven’t used a disposable foil pan to make the ice cream but I’m sure if would work fine 🙂
My kids would love this! The brighter the ice cream, the better, for some reason.
Nice recipe! Love no churn, just aw this on foodie crush with some others and hadn’t known anything about this technique – love unicorns so thank you for this and hope that at least by now you’re feeling much better!
Can you please explain a bit more how to get the mixture into the pan? Do you place it on top of one another until pan fills?
Hey Kerri,
You just spoon the mixture into the pan in spoonfuls, alternating spoonfuls of colors until the pan is full.
Love the colors! I’m wondering, what brand neon food coloring you used?
I have used both Wilton Gel Food Color and McCormick Neon Food Color for this ice cream. I like both but I think I like the Wilton gell better because you don’t need as much to get the bright colors.
That helps a lot! Thank you so much for letting me know!
The girls loved this recipe. Me being the perfectionist I am, and it not crossing my mind that these photos are probably photo shopped to make the colors more vibrant, went through the ice cream I made and then went back to the store twice trying like crazy for mine to be this vibrant. Don’t get me wrong- it was beautiful. But trying to have everything perfectly the way you imagine it in your head is a curse. It didn’t dawn on me to call my very close friend who bakes cakes, candy, and anything sweet- until after the fact. She said that if the colors were added to something bright white, it’s possible. But more than likely the ice cream recipe and the store bought ice cream was either a more of a vanilla color or there is an ingredient in it that tends to darken/dull colors. I tried the wilton brand and Publix brand. It was amazingly beautiful. It just wasn’t anywhere close to the photos. Having a daughter that is a content creator, I can not believe that I didn’t think of Photoshop or editing having probably atleast a teenie tiny bit to do with such bold, vibrant, neon and colorful swirls. I set myself up for this one honestly. Perfectionists tendencies only feel perfect when you forget about all the expectations and things that aren’t that important and focus on the moment/experience/important parts only. I absolutely loved this recipe. My girls loved feeling all special and had a blast! Thank you!! This is the absolute best! I intend on making this everytime the girls want to! Thank you for thanking the time to share your smarts with the world! I can’t wait to try a couple more of your ideas! Hooked!
Hi Mandy! I’m go glad that you and your girls liked the unicorn ice cream recipe. I didn’t use store bought ice cream for this recipe, so there wasn’t any vanilla tint. It was made using bright white heavy cream and neon food coloring. I used the McCormick Neon Assorted Food Coloring for this recipe and while yes, I did brighten it a bit in photo shop (as I do all my photos) the colors in this ice cream in real life and the colors in the photos were pretty darn close. Now as shown in the photo of the top of the ice cream, those colors were kinda of dull but much more vibrate once scooped. I’ve seen some photos on pinterest where people “tried” the recipe and some of the photos the colors are bright like these and some of the photos the colors are not quite as vibrant. I’m sure it can be a combination of food coloring brands/types, editing on my end and computer/phone screen color enhancement. But I am glad y’all liked the ice cream!
