Mama Sylvia’s Baked Beans recipe has been passed down through the generations and is loved by so many people! These baked beans take less than 5 minutes to put together and are out of the oven in under an hour!
I love family recipes. I love newer family recipes that have become fast favorites and I love old family recipes that have been passed down and loved through the generations! This baked bean recipe is one of the latter variety.
This recipe is one of the latter variety. This recipe, comes from my best friend’s sister, which was past down to her by their mama. Well it was passed down to both Nikki and Toni haha but Toni’s recipe box is where I got it from.
Do you remember my friend Toni? I wrote about her a few times on the blog.
I remember Toni making Mama Sylvia’s Baked Beans a few times and I remember Nikki making them as well as myself (with Toni’s direction) when she was sick.
I never got to meet Nikki and Toni’s mom, Sylvia but I heard that she was an amazing cook.
What you need to make the BEST Baked Beans:
- Pork n Beans
- onion powder (or 1 large onion chopped)
- yellow mustard (a big smiley face)
- brown sugar
- ketchup
How to make the BEST Baked Beans:
- Preheat oven to 325F.
- In a 9×13 dish, mix beans and onion powder (or chopped onion) together.
- Add mustard. (Sylvia & Toni said to draw a big smiley face in the beans with the mustard to get the right amount)
- Mix in the brown sugar and ketchup. Stir well.
- Cook for 45 minutes – 60 minutes.
Have you even made a family recipe and worried that it wouldn’t taste like the original? That’s how I felt about this recipe
I got the recipe from one of Toni’s recipe boxes, got permission from Nikki to publish it and then I worried that they wouldn’t taste like the their momma’s recipe.
I went shopping, made the recipe, sent some over to Nikki and her kids and crossed my fingers!
Guess what!
She said they were perfect! haha YES! Toni would be proud.
They’re super easy to make and oh so tasty! Just perfect with hot dogs or burgers.
I remember Toni making these in her little apartment kitchen. Even though I knew how to cook, I wanted to learn from her, I watched her every move.
You know what I remember about these baked beans? She use to say that the way to get the perfect amount of mustard was not to measure it out but to draw a big smiley face in the beans with the yellow mustard. The smiley face is something I remember and I think about it every time I make or eat baked beans. 🙂

Could these be done in the casserole crock pot?
Hi Laurie! I’m sure they could be but I’ve never made them in a crockpot so I wouldn’t know how long to tell you to cook them.
Thanks Angie. I’ll try it on a day when I’ll be home and can keep my eyes on it.
Let me know how it turns out! <3
Have made this for years .. my Mom showed me how to make it …you can also add a little of your favorite BBQ sauce to it …And above all DON’T FORGET THE BACON ….. always cook 3 or 4 pieces of bacon and use the grease to help season the beans ..chop up the back and use it to…. yummmm … now that is southern baked beans .
