I had no idea that toasted Cheerios were a thing until I met my mother in law. My father in law makes them for her and my husband thought this was a normal snack. Maybe it is! I just never had it growing up. Did you?
General Mills randomly sends me packaged of their new cereals with recipe cards throughout the year, and the other day a box of Cinnamon Cheerios showed up at my door with this Mini Doughnut Hot Buttered Cheerio recipe.
I decided to give them a try and instantly fell in love with them.
What you’ll need to make Mini Doughnut Hot Buttered Toasted Cheerios:

I had no idea toasted Cheerios was a “thing” ! I actually clicked on this link because I was curious as to what they were. They sound delicious and so easy to make. Pinned.

They are! haha My mother in law loves toasted cherrios. I didn’t know they were a thing either until I met her hahaha.
Penny Boggs says
I bet this would be fantastic with apple jacks
Katie says
You know how Cheerios comes out with pumpkins spice flavor in the fall?! That would be *next level* with this recipe!!
Angie says
OH MY GOSH!!!! muhahaha I’m totally going to make those!
Licia says
Absolutely I have been making hot buttery Cheerios for years…

Jen says
Well, we had buttered Cheerios as kids, and never thought much of it. Sooo good! I am thinking of making these for my nephew at college and mailing them when it cools down. Do you think they hold up well enough for that?
Angie says
They would! Just put them in an air tight container before you ship and they should be just fine.
Krystal Cook says
If he’s like my son, he will eat it even if it’s crumbs. We sent him a goodies package and I asked him how he liked the muffin tips… even bought a special pan because he always ate just the tops. He said he didn’t know that’s what they were but they were still good.
Christina says
I literally could not even read the recipe with so many pop up ads. Disappointing.
Angie says
Hi Christina, I only have 1 pop up add. Sorry it got in the way. Would you like me to e-mail you the recipe?
A Davis says
FWIW, there were approximately 10 popups that happened when clicking from Pinterest. They were not only blocking the article but also made it impossible to scroll. Killed the screen twice. ????
Eventually I finagled a way to read the recipe. My kiddos are going to love this idea!
Angie says
What in the world. I’ll have that checked out. So sorry! I only see 1 popup when I visit. I’ll figure it out. Sorry it was a pain
JD says
I came from Pinterest, and only had the one popup. Maybe you have a virus?
Angie says
The one pop up add is all I can see too 🙁
Patty says
You are so right . Fighting off pop ups. It is not worth the fight anymore .. Never used to be like this $$$$ what it’s all about
Angie says
Hi Patty. it’s not “all about the $$$$” but while I love sharing recipes, I need to make money too. This is my full time job that allows me to stay at home with my toddler instead of putting him into daycare. It also cost me a couple of hundred dollars just to run and maintain this blog every month and that doesn’t include the hundreds of dollars that I spend on food making recipes, remaking recipes, testing recipes and having the equipment I need to keep this blog running. If everyone that visited the blog was willing to pay a subscription fee to get the recipes I wouldn’t need to have ads BUT since this website/blog is FREE for everyone to look at and all of the recipes are FREE for anyone and everyone, I do have to have ads on the blog in order to make a living.
Lanay says
There are pop up ads because this is how Pinterest works. We do not have to pay to get all of these wonderful recipes and ideas, but the bloggers are able to make a living!
Angie says
Thank you, Lanay! <3
Sue says
Angie, while I understand your need to make money and the importance of staying home with your toddler, you must understand how frustrating it is when you can’t even read a recipe because of the pop-ups. As the other lady stated, Pinterest didn’t use to be like this. It started out with the idea of people sharing their ideas. I like it then. Not a fan of it now.
Angie says
I’m do understand why people don’t like them. But y’all must understand that you are getting these recipes for free. Bloggers are paying hundreds of dollars to maintain these sites and provide these recipes to people for free. If all you must do it deal with a few pop ups to get free content is that too much to ask for? You don’t have to pay any money for these recipes. Just a few extra seconds of your day to scroll past some ads.
Pamela Dalton says
Well jeez! I would suggest those who don’t like the ads, go buy a cookbook. Ads for bloggers are essentially commercials in your favorite TV show on those “free” channels. Yes, ads, like commercials, can be annoying, but for me, it’s worth it for the amazing recipes posted by some truly dedicated, talented cooks and I am grateful for the time and energy they spend to share their creations without charging their readers a dime. They share their gift FOR FREE, using advertising to fund their livelihood. I think that’s quite generous and I, for one, am more than happy to x-out that single, solitary pop up that I encounter on this site.
So instead of complaining about a VERY minor inconvenience, just say THANK YOU for sharing your talents with us ❤
Angie says
Thank you so much, Pamela!!! Hugs!!
Paula LeBorious says
I was coming here to say the same! People feel so entitled nowadays! Thanks for your recipes, and don’t mind the whiny petty, people!
Dorothy says
I hate when that happens! I instantly move on. ????
Angie says
Did you get a of pop ups on this page?
Steph says
Angie – I’m not replying on behalf of someone else, but rather to your feed. I had a TON of pop-ups, through Pinterest on my phone. Is there a way to “jump to the recipe”, as some recipes /bloggers do that? I wasn’t sure how that worked?
Angie says
Hey Steph! I don’t have the jump to recipe feature yet but I’m working on getting it.
Chica says
I only got one pop up and zero issues scrolling. I understand what you’re saying as I’ve experienced that before but I had no issues here FWIW.
velma says
pinterest is miserable on a phone. I can’t read any recipes due to the pop-ups, videos running, etc. on a pc, it’s a world of difference. I don’t even bother with pinterest on my phone. there’s no point 🙁
Kristie Towe says
So glad I came across this recipe…haven’t had these since I was a child. Brings back precious memories. I will be making these soon since I have the ingredients on hand. Thanks so much, Angie !!! ????
Angie says
I hope you love this version! My mother in law introduced me to toasted Cheerios! I didn’t know they were a thing until I met her.
Donna says
How long do they last in a sealed container, that is if you don’t eat them in one sitting.
Asking for a friend 🙂
Angie says
I tested them on our counter in a glass container and after about 4 days they were still good but loosing a bit of their crunch….but we had been opening them and closing them to check them
Adrienne says
Did you try this and store if so how did it work for you thinkin of doing this for kiddos as part of there baskets I do at christmas
Angie says
They tend to loose a bit of their crunch about 4-5 days after being made
Roxie says
They won’t last 4 days at my house! HAHA!
Felicia Bennett says
Thanks so much for the recipe. I have been trying to find something to make with Cheerios. This sound perfect
Christine says
Could these be made in a crockpot?
Angie says
I’m not sure but now that you’ve mentioned that I’ll try it! I bet it’ll be like making chex mix in the crock pot. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Angie says
Hi Christine ! I gave it a try and you can make them in the slow cooker! https://www.bigbearswife.com/crockpot-mini-doughnut-toasted-cheerios/
Cathy says
We grew up on toasted cheerios often instead of popcorn! I thought it was something my Grandma invented LOL! So excited to see different variations. Ours was straight up butter and salt.
Angie says
Thats the way my mother in likes them. Just toasted with butter, I’m not even sure she has sat on hers. haha
Teresa says
I’ve got to try this!! Thanks for sharing! Have you ever made this with brown sugar & chopped pecans for a praline-type flavor?
Angie says
oooo I haven’t but I’ll give that a try! I did try a maple version with the maple Cheerios which was super good.
Jen Pippin says
I love blueberry cake donuts, and just bought a box of Blueberry Cheerios, so I’m going to try them with that flavor! Just want to clarify though ~ they’re not actually “toasted” in the oven like (original) Chex Mix? They’re just sauteed before getting coated? Thanks!
Angie says
Right, they are toasted on the stove top instead of in the oven 🙂
Jen Pippin says
I made the blueberry. They taste okay, but the sugar isn’t coating the Cheerios (followed recipe/amounts/cook time to the letter), it’s all just sinking to the bottom. BTW ~ I got 2 pop-ups: one towards the bottom of the page and a video pop-up overlay.
Marci says
Just made these — delicious!
Was thinking about making another batch or two but using either maple extract or rum extract instead of vanilla.
Angie says
I made some the other night with maple syrup instead of the vanilla and they were AMAZING!
Jessica says
I don’t often comment on recipes, but I just had to say thank you for the flashback to my childhood. My father used to make us buttered toasted Cheerios when we were kids – we all loved them! This is the first time I’ve ever seen an actual recipe, I think I’ll have to make them for my kids now.
Angie says
Hi Jessica!! I am so glad that you took the time to comment! I hope y’all love them.
Shari says
Has anyone a recipe for making these savory?
Angie says
I am actually planning on making a savory chex mix seasoned version soon! haha I’ll let you know how it goes!
Jeanne says
Just what I’ve been wondering!
Vickey Johnson says
you know what? I love dill and with plain cherrios and dry dill and a little salt I bet it would be good.
Michaela says
Oh my gosh, these sound delicious and right up my alley. In the winter, I like making “dressed up” little snacks to have around and keep things interesting. Things like Chex Mix, Muddy Buddies/Puppy Chow, Firecrackers (toasted seasoned saltines), Ranch Oyster Crackers (Toasted oyster crackers with ranch seasoning), Seasoned Pretzels, Caramel or Candied Puff Corn, etc….. Now it looks like I’m going to have to add toasted Cheerios to that list! I literally just got done making a big batch of the ranch oyster crackers yesterday, so these will have to wait until next week, but I’m sure they will be delicious!
Angie says
I love ranch oyster crackers! I haven’t made Firecrackers yet but they sound wonderful!! I hope you like these Cheerios. Also I love the idea of keeping little snacks like this around. I bet my toddler would love that too haha.
Karen says
Have been eating toasted Cheerios since the 60’s (yep, that old!). My dad made them for us growing up and I still love them. Have tried toasting the maple variety the last few years and love them, also had original O’s and melted caramel over them a few times for a sweet treat. Planning to try these soon, sounds yummy!
Kathryn says
My mom made this back in the 50s.
Sarah says
It annoys me to see people complaining about ads. I literally only saw one, logging on to here from Pinterest.
Your recipe sounds great. I can’t wait to try it.
Angie says
Thank you so much, Sarah!
Jennie Rauch says
Lots of ads! Always is with Pinterest – have learned to find the little x & delete, & ignore the ones that aren’t so obnoxious, up front in the way. Pesky, but part of life if we want these gems for free.
Kristi says
Just made this today as a snack while distance learning with my 2nd grader. It’s yummy and quick. We also used the Pumpkin Spice Cheerios and they are amazing with it.
Angie says
I’m so glad that you liked it! I made a Pumpkin Spice version for the blog too haha https://www.bigbearswife.com/toasted-pumpkin-spice-cheerios/
Peggy says
What an interesting recipe. It sounds delightful. Do you toast the Cheerios before adding them to the deliciousness or pour the concoction on the baking sheet and then toasting? At What temperature do you bake them and how long? These would be great for nibbles at a family gathering, especially with lots of children!
Angie says
Hi Peggy 🙂 I have the directions and recipe on how to make them on the post right above the comment section 🙂 You toast these on the stove top and then add them to a bowl with the cinnamon and sugar to toss.
Allison says
Sorry, didn’t like them.
Angie says
Sorry that you didn’t like them.
Wendy says
How do you eat these? With your fingers? Or in a bowl with milk, like cereal? They look wonderful!
Angie says
Either way! We just eat them with our fingers as a snack. My father in law likes with with milk as cereal.
Jami says
Hi Angie! I am wondering what rock I’ve been living under that I have NEVER heard of toasted Cheerios! I actually have a box of the pumpkin spice ones and will definitely be making this recipe this coming weekend! So excited! Thanks for the recipe. Now, as far as the pop ups. Really people? Who, this day and age cannot deal with a pop up or two? I had one and hadn’t even given it a second thought until I saw so many people complaining about them. I have 30 thousands pins on Pinterest. I cannot imagine how many pop ups I’ve come across. Good Lord. Find a hobby people!
Jen salmon says
I used to make this when my kids were small, I’d add in mini chocolate chips and mini marshmallows to take to football games. We called this smorerrios.
Angie says
ooo I love the idea of adding mini chocolate chips and mini marshmallows! I’ll have to try that next time we make them. I’m crazy about all things “s’mores!”
Cathy says
This looks so yummy! I’ll be making them this week, one batch for me hubby and one batch for my college sophomore. These will be right up her alley. Oh, I also didn’t know these were a thing. I only had one pop up, not intrusive at all.
Angie says
Hi Cathy! I hope that y’all love them! I’m glad the pop up ads didn’t get in the way.
brittney says
Came here from Pinterest. Scanned the comments to see you say that you put ads on so you don’t have to send your son to daycare “for someone else to raise.” This is such a heartless comment to those of us who work and rely on group childcare. *I* raise my daughter. Period.
If you want to grow your audience and continue making money off the ads, please consider how you phrase things such as this. I will never be back.
Angie says
Hi Brittney,
I’m sorry that you thought it was a heartless comment. It’s just a figure of speech around here when people say they want to stay at home to “raise their children” instead of working outside of the home. It took us 10 years to convince my son and I want to spend as much time and I can plus that really is the reason that I stay home so that I can raise him every day. Do you always slam the door in people’s faces and scream that you won’t be returning when someone says something that you don’t like? That’s also rude.
Jessica says
Bye felicia ???? your exit speech on a blog post was totally necessary! Having done both i can most certainly say a daycare partially raises your kid. Sounds like you have some unresolved guilt about that? Or maybe its jealousy that she can do what you can’t? Either way your comment was not needed and poorly chosen. Have a wonderful day!
Christine says
Very easy quick sweet snack, but its addicting (be warned) lol…Love Cherrios and this might be my go to quick snack for my selld and grandkids.
Shilo Parisian says
Just made these on our first snowy day here in MN and family loved them. Thinking they would be a great addition to stocking stuffers/small gifts to teachers or family! Thanks for the delicious recipe!
Angie says
YAY! I’m so glad to heat that you liked them!
Mary says
I had no issues with ads. Thanks for the recipe, looks great.
Tiffany says
This sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try this! Also there were no pop up issues for me and how sweet you are to offer to send the recipe! I am now a follower of yours!
April says
What can I use instead of cinnamon my granddaughter cannot stand the taste of cinnamon in
Angie says
Hey! You can just leave out the cinnamon 🙂
Elizabeth says
I had no idea toasted Cheerios was a thing definitely going to try. I’ll be honest, the pop-ups are irritating; HOWEVER your response to reader about the time/money you put into your was LIT ????! ????????????????????????
Angie says
Thank you, Elizabeth! I’m so sorry the pop ups bothered you.
Kelly says
Can’t wait to make em! Came through Pinterest only one pop up ????
Krista says
I was wondering if you could make batches of this and freeze it.
Angie says
I haven’t tired that. If you give it a go, let me know if it turns out.
Mojoblogs says
Wow! This looks really really good. Perfect for snacking! Thank you so much for sharing this.
Ginny says
Oh my goodness! Just made these with Honey Nut flavor. They are amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe!
Angie says
So glad that you liked it!!
John A. Long says
I love Cheerios and Cinnamon! But I think, I need more instructions. The picture in the recipe, shows this Cheerios treat, as being in a cup. The instructions don’t say anything about putting it in a cup, after tossing it in the bowl. But It looks and sounds, wonderful! Maybe I’ll make it, soon.
Vickey Johnson says
Angie how “messy” are these to eat.. I want to make them for my Christmas gifts for my son and his fellow officers. They always sample the goodies while on shift and don’t want to give them anything that will leave crumbs on their uniforms. I am thinking about putting them in the oven to melt the sugar a bit for less fall off. Any ideas?
Angie says
Hi Vickey! That is so sweet of you!! I would stick them in a colander and shake it to get the excess sugar off. As long as they’re “good” and don’t wipe their fingers on their uniforms they should be ok haha <3 Merry Christmas!
Laurie says
I’ve been looking for easy snacks to make at home and this sounds like one I must try! I only have Honey Nut Cheerios on hand. Have you made them with Honey Nut Cheerios?
Angie says
I haven’t made it with Honey Nut Cheerios but I’m sure it would be fantastic!
Mandi says
Thank you for this wonderful treat. I can’t wait to try it. After reading through the comments I’ll try the mini chocolate chips & marshmallows.
P.S. Don’t worry about the adds. If someone really wants the recipe then they will figure out a way to get it. I only had 1 pop-up add with several adds throughout which is the norm.
Angie says
Hi Mandi! Let me know how the mini chocolate chips & marshmallows are! Glad the ads didn’t get in the way too much.
carl chiarenza says
love the hot buttered cheerios. Thank you. I have been adding cheerios to my savory chex mix receipe for years. Everyones favorite. I kept a huge bowl of them for snacks in the crew lounge when i was cooking in the Merchant Marines.
Maggie says
Hi! I just came across you’re recipe and it’s just before lunch time so this made me so hungry. I knew I needed to make some. I used another cereal I had on hand, the kind used to make Chex mix. I really didn’t follow your measurements since I wasn’t sure how my cereal would hold up but I added everything you listed and it came out so good. I also included a good sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice just because it was next to the cinnamon. So thank you I absolutely loved it and so did my kids. Mind you they are 21 and 22. So yay!!!
tara dalton says
I have never thought about this recipe but will try it for my husband. I am hoping I can use a sugar substitute though.
This could be low sugar for diabetics if so…
BTW: I didn’t have any problems with popup ads, but understand the need for them as a business owner.
Angie says
Hi Tara! You can make them without the sugar! My father in law makes toasted cheerios for my mother in law without the sugar because she is diabetic. She loves toasted cheerios!
I’m glad the popup ads didn’t bother you <3
Joanne Moran says
Made your hot buttered Cheerios they were good but baked in oven at 175degree for 10 min after to dry out a bit
Momof4 says
Has anyone tried them in milk?
Angie says
That’s how my father in law eats them 🙂
Kris says
I just want to thank Angie for a new idea for snacking. There are so many variations to change up this recipe that I don’t know which i want to make first. As for the pop up issue, I do always see a lot of them on Pinterest lately and it can get quite annoying. It didn’t used to be that way. I don’t believe that the bloggers have any control over how many are there. I think its Pinterest that puts them on because sometimes they cover content on a page and why would a blogger cover their own content.
Kim says
Question – The descriptions says “toasted” Cheerios… is there a step where you put them in the oven? Or is it simply mix in the butter then the sugary goodness and eat? I’m thinking they’d be kind of greasy – right?
I’m worried I’m missing a step.
Angie says
Hi Kim! We’re toasting in in a skillet on the stove top 🙂 (First step)
coreen says
I tried this with the seasonal Pumpkin Cheerios. Great thanksgiving snack
Alicia says
I made these today I feel like they turned soft? Are they supposed to not be crunchy? What did I do wrong?
Angie says
How long until they turned soft? like right after you made them, as you were making them, a few hours after making them?
Debbie Moeves says
Just came across this post on Pinterest. Being a diabetic, I was wondering if you could make the cinnamon sugar with Splenda instead of regular sugar?
Angie says
I’m not sure. I haven’t tried it that way. If you try it, let me know how it works out.
Robin says
Never heard of these but I think I’ll try them with a bit more butter, some garlic and onion powder, a dash of garlic salt and a smidge of pepper flakes. Remember the old saying “If you can’t say something nice, keep your mouth shut “? It’s a good rule to live by. Have a blessed day.
Linda Peterik says
