We love looking at Christmas lights during the holidays and what better way to show off how much we love them than to turn them into a festive dessert! These Christmas Light Brownies are so simple to make and perfect for the kids to help decorate!
Use red and green M&M candies or all the colors to create fun and festive brownies this holiday season!

- Brownies (recipe links and ideas below)
- 1 cup vanilla frosting (recipe links and ideas below)
- black icing or gel
- Red and Green M&M Candies
- Piping Bags
- # 32 Open Star Tip
What brownies to use for Christmas Light Brownies:
Just like with the Easy Christmas Tree Brownies, you can really use any type of brownie for this Christmas Light Brownie design.
I’ll add my favorite brownie recipe to the bottom of this post but any recipe will work.
You could also use these amazing brownie recipes:
- Blackberry Cheesecake Brownies
- Dulce De Leche Brownies
- M&M Oreo Stuffed Brownies (with Christmas M&M candies)
- Peanut Butter Crunch Brownies
- White Chocolate Brownies
- Toffee Brownies
Use boxed brownie mix or bakery bought brownies to make these even easier!
What Candy to use for the Edible Christmas Lights:
For these Christmas Light Brownies I used a combination of red and green M&M chocolate candies. I bought one of the Christmas bags that just had red and green M&MS but you could also buy regular M&Ms and have multicolored Christmas lights on the brownies.
I also saw that Rachel from SprinkleSomeFun.com mad sheet pan of Christmas Light Brownies and she used candy coated sunflower seeds for her lights!
I think that either M&M candies or candy coated sunflower seeds work great for this dessert. You can also get red, white and green candy coated sunflower seeds if you don’t want a bunch of different colors.
It’s easier for me to find M&Ms around here but I’ve had candy coated sunflower seeds before and they’re pretty tasty.
Just remember to flip the M&Ms sideways when you press them into the frosting so that they look like Christmas lights!
What to use for the edible Christmas light string:
For these brownies, I used a small tube of black icing that I already had in my baking supplies.
You could tint some of the vanilla icing black or you can grab a small tube of black frosting from the grocery store or craft store. You could also use melted chocolate, melted almond bark or melted candy melts to draw the string onto the brownies.
How to make Christmas Light Brownies:
- Bake, Cool and Cut Brownies. The recipe I use yields 9 brownies.
- Fill a piping bag, fitted with a # 32 Open Star Tip, with 1 cup vanilla frosting. Pipe zig zags of frosting on top of the brownie.
- Use black icing or black icing gel to draw a “string” on the brownie for the lights.
- Press M&Ms (on their sides) into the frosting along the string to create Christmas lights
The Piping Tip:
I love the look that the # 32 Open Star Tip gives the frosting when I use it to frost brownies.
I first started using it to frost brownies when I made my Monster Mash Halloween Brownies and I’ve been in love with it ever since!
What frosting to use for these frosted Easy Christmas Tree Brownies:
I used canned frosting! I did and I feel no shame!
To frost 9 brownies you only need about 1 cup of frosting, maybe 1 1/2 cup and I didn’t want to make a whole batch of frosting for just a cup.
If you’re making a big batch of the Christmas Light Brownies you may need more frosting and you can find some awesome recipes here:
- Vanilla Bean Frosting (Pumpkin Spice Macaron recipe)
- Cream Cheese Frosting (Hummingbird Cake recipe)
